An early morning accident claimed the lives of two
Colorado teenagers October 20th. Oscar Salas Hernandez, 12,
of Littleton, CO, and Ursula Gallegos, 17, of Denver, CO,
died from injuries sustained in the accident.
The one-car rollover occurred at 9:30 a.m. on
Northbound I-15, at approximately mile marker 196. UHP
Trooper Greg Kelsey was the first on the scene.
According to Trooper Kelsey, the driver, Antonio
Villa, 18, of Commerce City, CO, was distracted by someone
in the backseat and veered into the median. He overcorrected
and rolled the 2003 Pontiac Grand Am four times. Speed may
also have been a factor in the accident.
Three of the four occupants were ejected. Hernandez
was killed immediately. Gallegos was transported to Central
Valley Medical Center and died before they could airlift her
to SLC.
Another occupant, Yara Hernandez, 15, Littleton, CO,
sister to the deceased, was taken to the University of Utah
Hospital where she was operated on. She is listed as
critical with pelvic and facial injuries.
The driver, Villa, received minor injuries to his leg
and was released from CVMC.
Responding to the scene were EMTs from Scipio and
Levan. Nephi also responded to assist at the scene.
Trooper Kelsey was assisted by UHP Sergeant Paul
Mangelson, Sheriff Alden Orme, and Sheriff Deputies Andrew
Davidson and Derek Walk.
