  • Commissioners discuss fairness of fee waivers for political gatherings

Has the Republican party been charged for using the county building for a political convention or not?
Commissioners could not answer that question without doing some research and so tabled making a decision on whether or not the Democratic Party should be charged for using the building.
Donald Ball, Juab County Democrat Party Chair, had requested to use the downstairs cultural hall for their upcoming event and had been told there was a charge.
"I understand that when a political party holds an event downstairs the (rental) fee is waived," said Ball. "I was informed that I would need to meet before the commission."
The political party needs to reserve the downstairs area of the county building for their convention which is set for May 12 at 6:30 p.m.
Jamie Garrett, Juab County Fair and Events Manager, said she thought that the Republican Party had been charged for using the building and had checked with the clerk's office because she was not certain.
One of the long-time deputies said she thought that Republicans had been charged.
Ball said he understood that political parities were not charged for using the facility if it was for political reasons but were charged for events such as dinners.
"I understood that the dinners were considered more of a private affair but a convention was open to the public," said Ball.
Byron Woodland, commission chairman, said that the commission would take the request under advisement while they investigate what had been done in the past and would then get back with Ball.
"We want to be fair," said Woodland.
