Gliders will be back in the skies during the week of June 29 through July 5 for an OLC/XC style event and during a Region 9 North contest to be held August 4-9.
"There should be in the neighborhood of 50 gliders at our airport for that week," said Randy McKnight, city administrator.
According to the event website, utahsoaring.org, last year's event was so successful they decided to hold two events in our area this year.
"Based on current registrations, we are optimistic the June OLC camp may be the largest gliding event/contest in the past decade!" states the website.
What happens during an OLC/XC glider camp?
The website offers this explanation:
The newly-created format for an OLC / XC event allows for both newer pilots and veteran racing pilots to have a great time. Daily racing tasks are called, however the pilots do not have to fly the task and can fly their own flights and see who gets the highest OLC points for the day. With only daily scoring and no ongoing score sheet for the week, pilots can enjoy a relaxed but organized flying atmosphere without worrying about being at the bottom of some score sheet.
This camp is perfect for glider pilots who have never been to an organized contest before and want to see what flying cross country with others and/or flying racing tasks is all about.
The Region 9 North contest will be held August 4-9 which coincides with the Juab County Fair.
The website touted Nephi as "an outstanding airfield and area to fly during the 2013 camp and now all the racers need to come and also get the Nephi racing experience."
