  • JHS Sterling Scholars to compete in area competition March 31st

Eleven students from Juab High School will compete in the 43rd Annual Sterling Scholar competition on March 31. The awards program will take place that night at the Sevier Valley Center, Richfield, at 7:00 p.m. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.
Sabrina Sage is the Agricultural Science Sterling Scholar. She is the daughter of Lance and Aurelie Sage of Mona. She has been actively involved in FFA during high school. Her freshman and sophomore years she was awarded Woman of the Year. She has received her Greenhand, Chapter and State degrees as well as leadership and scholarship awards. She served as the Career Success chairman, treasurer and reporter for the Mt. Nebo FFA Chapter. She has taught at the elementary schools about safety and health for three years. She ran the petting zoo during the Juab County Fair. Her chapter started a community garden and she helped implement this project. During her sophomore year she spent a week at the World Ag Expo in Tulare, California. She helped at the Mahindra Tractors booth and represented her FFA chapter. She served as a Chapter Delegate during the 2014 Utah State FFA Convention. In the Agronomy contest she placed 1st at t SUU and 3rd at State. She is running for State FFA office in March.
Erika LeCheminant is the Business and Marketing Education Sterling Scholar. She is the daughter of Kyle and Amy Stanley of Mona. She was raised in the traditional farm household in Mona. She has been involved with the JHS Marching Band, Oak Hills Vaulters, the Red Club, cross country team, track and field team, and FBLA where she currently holds the title of President. She has also served the community as a member of the 4-H Teen Council where she was president for two consecutive years. She has served as a 5th year 4-H Southwest Region Ambassador. She hopes to attend Utah State University where she will major in business. She is a competitive regional vaulter and also loves to run.
Tanner Drake is the Computer and Information Technology Sterling Scholar. He is the son of Mark and Kristi Drake of Mona. He has been involved in FBLA for many years and has been treasurer for two years. He has placed in numerous events including Intro to Technology Concepts, Intro to Information Technology, and Networking Concepts (twice), all of which he placed 3rd. He has also placed Network Design at a state competition that later he took to nationals in San Antonio, Texas. He has been recognized by JHS for his excellence in Graphic Arts. He enjoys playing the saxophone and has received both Excellent and Superior ratings at Solo and Ensemble. He loves to play soccer and has hosted a clinic to help students develop skills at local elementary schools. He is a varsity starter for the high school team. He is an Eagle Scout and constructed a handicap ramp for the Mona City Park.
Makelle Wright is the Dance Sterling Scholar. She is the daughter of Maughn and Karla Wright of Nephi. She is currently serving as Student Body Historian. She was the junior editor for the yearbook and is currently the senior editor. She has been a member of the JHS ProVita since 2012 and is the drill team president. She was selected as a member of the All-Region and Academic All-Region team. She choreographed her junior prom and senior ball promenades. She also helped with auditions for "The Nutcracker" performance and choreographed the Mother Ginger and the Buffoons dance. She is a dance assistant at Lisa's Dance Shoppe. She is a two year member of the National Honor Society. She received two blue ribbons at her high school art show. She is currently the 1st attendant in the Miss Nephi royalty, She has presented numerous assemblies for elementary and junior high schools on positive body image. She helped fourth graders with their math and organized a fundraiser for the women's shelter. She has been on the honor roll all four years of high school.
Brenna Brotherson is the English Sterling Scholar. She is the daughter of Gordon and Karen Young of Mona, and David Brotherson of Mt. Pleasant. During her first two years attending North Sanpete High School, she was able to achieve and maintain excellent grades all while participating in the very time consuming and physically demanding sport of drill team. After her sophomore year she was able to travel to Italy and Greece on an educational tour with her high school English class where she was able to observe and experience their rich and beautiful culture. She transferred to Juab High School in 2013. She learned new skills and experiences by working with her stepfather on his farm. She has maintained a 4.0 GPA. She is currently active in many public service opportunities.
Katie Wickel is the Family and Consumer Science Sterling Scholar. She is the daughter of Lon and Gloria Wickel of Nephi. She has had the opportunity to serve her community and grow as an individual. Her favorite project enabled her to help others in a unique way. Using a donated wedding dress, she recycled the fabric and compiled bereavement gowns and tuxedos for premature and stillborn babies. These tiny garments were packaged with a keepsake pillow along with a message of support. They were then donated to a local hospital. She is the FCCLA Chapter presdient and has enjoyed building the club. She has served her community through 4-H and at the elementary schools. She has been active in student government, athletics, National Honor Society, and other extracurricular clubs. She has maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout her high school career and is ranked number one in her class.
Valarie Burke is the Mathematics Sterling Scholar. She is the daughter of Kevin Burke of Wescosville, PA and John and Brenda Thompson of Levan. She has a 4.0 GPA and an ACT composite of 32 with a 31 in math. She was selected for the Utah Academic All-State soccer team. She has competed at state for the discus throw in track and field. In rodeo she has won many first, second, and third place buckles. She has lettered and qualified for state competitions in track and field, soccer and rodeo. She has served as Orchestra Secretary, FCCLA Secretary, GPS Vice-President, Sophomore Class President, National Honor Society President, Juab Rodeo Club President and Reporter, and Math Club President.
Jared Rowley is the Music Sterling Scholar. He is the son of Greg and Jennifer Rowley of Nephi. He has been a part of many musical groups at JHS. He was a member of the band for four years. He performed in the jazz band which received Superior rankings at state his freshman year. He has been a member of the choir for three years, performing in Seatlle, Temple Square, and a choir chosen to sing Michael McLean's "Forgotten Carols". He has accompanied many singing groups and soloists. He teaches piano lessons. He currently volunteers at Red Cliffs Elementary in the music program. He attended the Juilliard Jazz Camp at Snow College. He competed at region solo and ensemble and received a 1+. At the state level he received a 1 superior.
Megan Wood is the Science Sterling Scholar. She is the daughter of Gary and Stephanie Wood of Levan. She has been an honor roll student throughout high school. She is currently serving as Senior Class Vice-President. She has attended a Health Career Exploration Camp hosted by SUU for the past 2 years. Over the summer she did science demonstrations for the 4-H in the Park programs. This year she is coordinating JHS's Red Cross Blood Drive, and has helped organize blood drives in the past. She has helped judge elementary school science fairs at both Red Cliffs and Mona Elementary for the past several years. She has also been an active member in NHS helping with various activities and donating many hours of service. She excels in music, participating in Orchestra, Concert Choir, and Madrigal Choir. She has received Superior ratings for violin solos in Regional and State competitions. She has also participated in UMEA's Honor Choir and All-State Choir.
Regan Warner is the Social Science Sterling Scholar. She is the daughter of Patrick and Jalena Warner of Nephi. She has served as JHS Speech and Debate Treasurer, Public Forum captain and vice-president. She is a three time public forum region champion. She was chosen 3rd runner-up in the Miss Utah Outstanding Teen competition. She was also awarded a top 5 Teens in Action Award. She was selected as 1 of 50 students nationwide to attend the General Tommy Franks Four Star Leadership Program in Oklahoma City this past summer. She also attended Utah Girls State. She has maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout high school.
Riki Squire is the Speech and Drama Sterling Scholar. He is the son of Cory and Pascaline Squire of Mona. He is the president of the Speech and Debate team and has qualified for the National Speech and Debate tournament twice and hopes to repeat this year. He was the state runner-up in Original Oratory in his first year in Speech and Debate, and has played multiple roles in school musicals and plays. He is serving at the National Honor Society Publicity Manager this year, and is a region and two-time state champion in Duo Interpretation and Contemporary Play Scene.
Savannah Peterson is the Visual Arts Sterling Scholar. She is the daughter of Michael and Rosalie Peterson of Nephi. She was a National Gold Medalist in the National Scholastic Art and Writing Awards for her collagraph which was featured in Carnegie Hall in NYC and is now on tour with the other pieces from the competition. She was also published in "Navigating the Maze", a student anthology of art and literature two years in a row, and was recently accepted into the Utah Arts Festival Holiday Show. She has been in many other shows including the Eccles Community Art Center Black and White 2014 Show, the Covey Center Summer Arts Showcase, and the 6x6x2013 Fundraising Exhibit in Rochester, New York.
