  • JHS Speech and Debate keeps tradition going by winning region title

KEEPING TRADITION GOING • The JHS Speech and Debate team brought home the region title on February 26. They will compete at the state competition March 13.

Juab High School Speech and Debate team has done it again. They captured what is said to be the team's 12th region title in a row on February 26 at Carbon High School.
Coach Kiera Beddes, Juab's newest speech and debate coach, said that it could be an even longer winning streak and is glad the team is keeping the tradition going.
"These kids are seriously so impressive," said Beddes. "They worked hard for Region and they are super excited for State in two weeks! I couldn't be more proud. We are ever so grateful for all the support: from families, the community and our school. Together, we are Juab!"
The team earned a total of 143 points outscoring second place finisher Richfield by almost seventy points. Coming in 3rd was Carbon; 4th, Payson; and 5th, North Sanpete.
Juab swept in Congress with Elijah Forscutt earning 1st, Kiersten Openshaw earning 2nd, and Kymber Taufer earning 3rd. They also swept in Foreign Extemp with Shelby Cameron taking 1st, Nate Smith taking 2nd, and Rein Warner taking 3rd.
In Public Forum, Regan Warner and Savanna Carter placed 1st, and Hunter Steele and Megan Jones placed 2nd.
Jordan Whitlock took 2nd in Lincoln Douglas. Cameron Welburn took 1st in Impromptu. Kathryn Reese took 1st in Oratory. Morgan Naylor took 2nd, and Hunter Steele took 3rd in National Extemp.
Kathryn Reese and Shelby Cameron took 1st, and Julia Hughes and Michelle Duncan took 3rd in Policy.
USU Eastern offered scholarships to 1st place winners and runners-up to help start up a debate program at the school. 1st place winners received $4,000 scholarships and runners-up received $1,000 scholarships. Juab placers took home approximately $32,000 in scholarship money.
The state competition will take place on March 13 at Park City High School.
