The Juab County Fire District board seems to control the
purse strings and there seemed much more than that for board
members to do.
Nephi City Council invited Mark Farr, the city's
representative on the fire district board of directors, to
attend council meeting and inform the council about the fire
district and about his goals on the board.
One of his goals was to make certain that the money of
the fire district was spent wisely.
Farr said he had been the fire chief in Elk Ridge before
moving to Nephi. He had experience in fire fighting and had
some goals, as a result.
"It will take me some time to see how the fire district
works, but I can tell you some of my goals," he said. "I
think response time is the most important factor."
A fire, he said, doubles in size every two minutes.
Therefore, it was important to make certain that individual
city fire departments and those responding to county fires
concentrate on fast response times.
He would also like to see more education for
firefighters.
Nephi now has some firefighters who are category 1 and
when he first arrived in Nephi that was not the case so some
progress in education was being made.
"In Elk Ridge, we developed a fire attack plan," he said.
"Where there are high risk areas, the department developed a
plan for responding and fighting those fires."
Farr said the second-hand fire equipment market should
also be looked into because it was a good way to get fire
trucks.
He thought consideration should be given to who would run
the equipment, where it would be stored, and how it would be
used before equipment was ordered.
The city council wants to be informed of actions taken by
the fire board and one of Farr's duties will be to see that
the council is kept abreast of decisions and will also
obtain minutes of board meetings for the council to
review.
