On Monday, Oct. 2, at 8:30 a.m., Paul Mangelson was
sitting in a dentist's chair. At 9:00 a.m. he had made a
drug bust with a street value of nearly one million
dollars.
After leaving the Nephi Dental Clinic, Mangelson
headed south on I-15 to milepost 217. There he stopped and
watched the traffic. It wasn't long before a black Mercury
Marquis passed by doing 80 MPH.
After stopping the car and issuing a warning notice
for speeding, Mangelson noticed several indicators of
smuggling activity about the car. A search was conducted and
222 pounds of marijuana was found concealed in a secret
compartment in the trunk and bumper areas of the
vehicle.
The value of the marijuana could run as high as one
million dollars if broken down into small amounts and sold
on the street.
The driver of the car was Amelia Anguiano Cota of San
Diego, California. Passenger in the car was Nicanor
Rodriguez Salamonca, also of San Diego.
Sgt. Mangelson was assisted at the scene by Trooper
Greg Kelsey of the Utah Highway Patrol.
