Two hikers were lost on Mt. Nebo overnight, but were
found the next day by deputies from Juab County Sheriff's
Office.
The irony was that Steve Andrews and his son were lost
in Andrews Canyon on the Andrew's Trail.
Andrews and his 17-year old son from Layton traveled
to Nephi on Sunday and stayed in a local motel so they could
be ready to start an early morning hike on Mt. Nebo, said
Alden Orme, Juab County Sheriff.
"Early Monday morning, they hiked Nebo," said Orme.
"At 4:30 p.m. they called Andrew's wife to tell her they
were OK."
By 1 a.m., the pair had not yet arrived home and the
sheriff's office was alerted by a worried wife and
mother.
Deputy Mike Tishner and Orme began a search for the
missing pair.
On Tuesday morning, the sheriff organized a search by
horseback. The two were located on Tuesday after spending
the night lost.
"They got in the wrong canyon as they began their
descent," said Orme. "They did have a space blanket with
them and were also able to start a fire to keep warm."
However, some of the trip down the mountain was done
in the dark, he said.
"Always take a flashlight when you go hiking," said
Orme. "Hikes often take longer than you think they
will."
One thing the two men did have was space blankets and
fire starting materials. Being prepared often makes the
difference, he said.
Orme said all-day hikers should still prepare for
plans not going as outlined. They should have flashlights,
food, fire building materials, and something to keep them
warm.
The two men were located at approximately 9 a.m.
Tuesday in Salt Creek Canyon.
Cell phones do not work in all areas of the canyon so
the men were not able to alert family members that they were
lost.
"I went to school with a Steve Andrews," said Orme.
"This is not the same individual, though the father and son
said they did choose the trail because of its name."
