It was erroneously reported (to Salt Lake news media) Tuesday that a man had died as the result of a motorcycle accident after being transferred to a Salt Lake City Hospital.
Darby Sharp, 49, Eureka, was pronounced dead at the scene of the second of two separate but connected motorcycle accidents which occurred on Monday.
Wednesday, the Utah Highway Patrol reported that the man, Jeremy Jon Goodman, 31, Eureka, is still alive but in critical condition.
UHP troopers originally reported that Goodman died at the University of Utah hospital after being airlifted there following an accident in which he lost control of his motorcycle and crashed outside of Eureka. However, that is not the case.
On Wednesday, UHP reported that Goodman was alive and was in critical condition at the University of Utah hospital.
Goodman and Sharp were riding with a third motorcyclist just before midnight Monday night on westbound U.S. Highway 6 near milepost 139 from Eureka at approximately 11:45 p.m., said Hoby Metz, Utah Highway Patrol Sgt.
"Please be aware that there were two separate motorcycle crashes that were related to each other," said Metz.
The first motorcycle crash resulted in a critical injury that left a Goodman on life support and not expected to survive. The second motorcycle crash did result in a fatal injury to Sharp who was en route to obtain help in Eureka for Goodman, the victim of the first motorcycle crash.
"There were three motorcyclists altogether who were traveling together as they left the town of Eureka westbound on August 9," said Metz.
"Three drivers were traveling together when the first driver, Goodman, lost control of his 2003 fully dressed Harley Davidson motorcycle on a curve and traveled on a sloping, grassy shoulder for several feet," said Metz.
Goodman was thrown from the motorcycle and skidded several feet before he struck a cedar post and a barbed wire fence. He received critical injuries to his head and was flown to the University of Utah hospital.
Sharp was riding his full dressed 2009 Harley Davidson motorcycle when Goodman crashed, said Metz.
After Goodman crashed, Sharp went to get help. He was traveling eastbound on U.S. Highway 6 back to Eureka.
"Sharp was traveling at a high rate of speed into Eureka," said Metz. "He failed to negotiate a turn in the roadway."
"Sharp's motorcycle left the roadway to the right, impacted a rock embankment, vaulted, and came to rest on the embankment," said Metz.
He was dead at the scene but was taken to Central Valley Medical Center in Nephi by West Juab Ambulance.
Metz said that neither driver was wearing a helmet.
Alcohol may have been a factor in each of the accidents.
Trooper Jared Jensen was the investigating officer of the Goodman accident. Trooper Corey Housekeeper was investigating officer of the Sharp accident. Troopers were assisted at the accident scenes by Sgt. Metz and Sgt. Kevin Rhoades. Sgt. Metz was the supervising officer.
