The 78th annual Ute Stampede was one to remember with the Mammoth Parade on Friday taking place during a wind and rain-filled storm and Saturday's rodeo arena becoming a mud-bog event center.
Nevertheless, the Stampede went on, rain or not, and in the end, the rodeo awarded total prize money of $30,187.50 in six events: Bull Riding, Saddle Bronc Riding, Calf Roping, Team Roping, Steer Wrestling, and Women's Barrel Racing.
"Louie Jones, our bullfighter, made the best jump of his life," said Tara Garrett Sperry, Ute Stampede Committee member. "It was awesome to watch him clear the bull in the conditions which were presented to him."
"Our specialty act, The Riata Ranch Cowboy Cowgirls, did awesome. They did not miss a beat," said Sperry. "They performed in pouring down rain."
All of the cowboys turned in great performances during the three-day rodeo.
Bull Riding: Scottie Knapp, Albuquerque, NM, placed first with a score of 89.0 for a prize of $1,855.92; Jarrod Craig, Hilsboro, TX, placed second with a score of 87.0 for a prize of $1,406; Dustin Daniels, Fountain Green, UT, won third place with a score of 81.0 for a prize of $1,012.32; Brant Atwood, Fort Worth, TX, placed fourth with a score of 80.0 for a purse of $674.88; Dustin Bowan, Fredericksburg, PA, placed fifth with a score of 77.0 for a purse of $393; and Wyatt Mecham, Heber, UT, placed sixth with a score of 73 for a prize of $281.20.
Saddle Bronc: Chase Bennett, Santaquin, UT, garnered first place by earning 78.0 points for a purse of $1,517.34; Travis Sheets, Hyannis, NE, took second by earning 77.0 for a purse of $1,149.50; Colt Hamaker, Centennial, WY, won third place with a score of 73.0 for a prize of $827.64; Jake Larson, Garland, UT, placed fourth with a score of 70.0 and won $551.76; Landon Mecham, Tropic, UT, came in fifth with a score of 69.0 for a prize of $321.86; a three way tie earned Cade Taylor, Burley, ID, Levi Berry, Morgan, UT, and Shelby Terry, Bear River, UT, sixth place with a score, each, of 68.0 and a prize of $76.63 each.
Calf Roping: Joe Frost, Randlett, UT, won first with a time of 8.8 seconds for a purse of 1,639.22; Justin Parke, Gooding, ID, took second with a time of 10.4 for a prize of $1,356.60; Whit Cross, Huntsville, UT, won third with a time of 10.5 for a prize of $1,073.97; Shank Edwards, Tatum, NM, won fourth with a time of 10.7 for winnings of $793.35; Justin Truman, Huntington, UT, placed fifth with a time of 11.4 for a prize of $508.72; and Trampus Quarnberg, Annabella, UT, placed sixth with a time of 11.7 for a prize of $282.62.
Steer Wrestling: Jake Ashworth, Layton, UT, Shayne Bennett, Riverton, and Joe Frost, Randlett, UT, split first, second and third place with a tie for the time of 4.5 and each won a prize of $1,185.60; Craig James Smith, Honeyville, UT, and Hadley Bennett, Herriman, UT, split fourth and fifth place with a time each of 4.7 and a purse of $568.10 each; and Baylor Roche, Tremonton, UT, won sixth place with a time of 4.9 and earned a prize of $247.
Team Roping: Steve Young, Goshen, UT, and Olin Pulham, Heber, UT, won first place with a time of 5.8 and earned $1,260.41 each; Jade Stoddard, St. Anthony, ID, and Brad Freeland, West Haven, UT, earned a time of 6.2 and received $1,043.10 each; Garrett Tonozzi, Fruita, CO, and Kinney Dale Harrell, Marshall, TX, and Robby Farias, Kilauea, HI and Cole Wilson, Lake Shore, UT, split the third and fourth place with a time for each team of 6.4 and a prize each of $717.13; Brian Winn, Annabella, UT, and Dusty Morse, Randolph, UT, placed fifth with a time of 6.5 and each won $391.16; and Chris Freed, Pocatello, ID, and Levi Piquet, Harrisville, UT, won sixth with a time of 7.1 for a purse of $217.31 each.
Women's Barrel Racing: Lea Baze, Midland, TX, had a time of 17.40 to win first place and a prize of $1.193.01; second was Nancy Hunter, Neola, UT, with a time of 17.54 for a prize of $1,022.58; third was Amber Berry, Cedar City, UT, with a time of 17.74 for a prize of $852.15; fourth and fifth tie, Amanda Nielsen, South Jordan, UT, and Jessica Jones, Clinton, UT, each with a time of 17.77 for a prize each of $653.31; there was a tie for sixth and seventh, Desirae Wheeler, Idaho Falls, ID and Norma Wood, West Jordan, UT, each had a time of 17.81 to receive $397.67 each; eighth place went to Sheila Hill, Saint Anthony, ID, for a time of 1.82 and a prize of $227.24; ninth place was claimed by Jean Lopour, Cedar City, UT, for a time of 17.83 and a prize of $170; and tenth place went to Sarah Kieckhefer, Prescott, ID, for a time of 17.85 and a prize of $113.62.
