Times-News Correspondent A fire which began in Juab County was still burning on Monday morning but the blaze had burned over the hill at the border of Juab and Utah Counties and had become the problem of Santaquin. The largest of four state fires reported on Sunday, was the blaze, a 2,000-acre fire in Santaquin, Utah County. "We have a small army of fire fighters coming," said Utah County Fire Marshal Tom Wroe, "and we expect to renew our fight today." The fire flared up near Rocky Ridge in Juab County and headed north. The flashpoint was near a road and railroad track, but a cause hadn't been pinpointed. The fire, which began at 1 p.m. Saturday, was still out of control on Monday but no longer threatened homes and structures at the small community, Juab County's newest town. The new county fire marshal is a resident of the community of Rocky Ridge and the town's fire equipment was mustered to the scene to protect homes. In addition, fire equipment from the county was summoned to the scene. Crews were able to steer the roaring blaze around the few structures and heavy equipment that were threatened in the southwestern section of Utah County as well. "That fire just ran with the wind. It just rocked," Wroe said. The fire which began near Rocky Ridge was just one of four brush fires which burst across the Wasatch Front Saturday, wreaking havoc for fire crews in Utah, Salt Lake and Juab counties. Winds at 17 mph and 8 percent humidity Saturday hampered efforts of the more than 100 fire fighters from numerous agencies that battled the flames. A few hours after the Santaquin/Rocky Ridge fire ignited, another fire began torching the mountains above Provo. In Salt Lake County, a pair of mid-day fires caused headaches for fire crews. In Herriman, a 50-acre blaze in Butterfield Canyon was extinguished in an hour, but it could have been much worse. At 4:25 p.m., about 40 minutes after crews were called to Herriman, a brush fire broke out near an auto-repair junk yard in Magna. Like the blaze in Herriman, the Magna blaze was contained fairly quickly. |
