Mona raised the rates residents of the community will pay
for natural gas to 71-cents per therm.
"The Juab Rural Development Board approved a rate
increase of 5 percent above the rate of each municipality
that serves that area," said Doran Kay, council member.
Council members voted that the consumption of July will
reflect the new increase. The rate increase will affect all
of the customers living in the county.
Meaning that the August bill will include new rate being
charged.
Each city is responsible for setting a rate.
"JRDA actually did not set a rate, but a percentage,"
said Kay.
"We can adopt a rate increase and 71-cents would be
consistent with what has been done by JRDA and by other
communities."
He said Nephi has the most county customers, since each
municipality serves the customers living in the county who
are closer to that municipality. One exception, he said, is
the community of Rocky Ridge.
The community is not geographically near to Nephi,
however, Nephi does supply gas to Rocky Ridge customers.
"That is because Rocky Ridge is not a member," said
Kay.
The reason for the increases, he said, is that the price
of gas is raising to JRDA and the city customers. The
municipally-owned gas company can no longer afford to supply
the natural resource for the money charged customers in the
past.
