![]() The Sterling Scholars of Central Utah will hold their annual Awards ceremony at the Juab Junior High Auditorium (7th & 8th Grade Center) on Tuesday, March 30. Fourteen of Juab High School's top students will vie with students from thirteen other schools in Central Utah for cash prizes and scholarships. Hali Nielsen, daughter of Raymond and Sandy Nielsen, Nephi, is the English Sterling Scholar. Hali is currently Student Body Historian, Editor-in Chief of The Clarion, and president of the Girls Athletic Association. She has been involved in language arts programs at the elementary and middle schools of the district. Named Academic All-State in Volleyball, Hali has participated in all three sports while attending JHS. Hali's GPA is 3.9997. She has ACT scores of 28 in English, 29 in Reading, 29 in Mathematics, and 28 Composite. Heidi Richards, daughter of Ken and Tammy Richards, Nephi, is the Math Sterling Scholar. In addition to being involved in Drill Team, Cross Country, and Track, Heidi has been heavily involved in tutoring math students at all grade levels. As a Junior, Heidi placed first in Snow College's Mathematics Competition, and she is president of this year's math team. Her GPA is 4.0 and she sports an ACT Composite of 30, with 33 in Math, 31 in English, and 29 in Science. Social Science Scholar is Taryn Christensen, daughter of Carey and Jackie Christensen, Levan. Taryn is Student Body President. She re established the National Honor Society at JHS and is also president of that organization. She initiated the peer tutoring program and helps teach history at Nephi Elementary School. She is also involved in the JHS Debate program and FBLA, and she plays violin in the Utah Valley Youth Symphony. Taryn's GPA is 3.96 and she has a 28 on the English portion of the ACT. Harris Taylor, son of Mike and JoLynn Tasker, Mona, is Science Sterling Scholar. He is NHS vice president and is also a member of the math team. He is a peer tutor and a member of FFA. He has been involved in a plant taxonomy project and natural resource programs. He has also presented science programs to the elementary schools in the district. His blood drive in Mona was a huge success. Harris's 3.97 GPA is complemented by an ACT score of 29 in Math and 27 in English. Breann Bowles, daughter of Von and Chris Bowles, Nephi, is the Foreign Language Scholar. Breann attended Girls State last summer. She attended Espaniolanda at BYU and was named Spanish Ambassador. She has helped tutor a 5th grade student who spoke no English when he came to Nephi. She has also created a handout and provided training for the East Juab County Ambulance crew as they frequently deal with victims who speak only Spanish. She has also served as a translator at the Nephi City Pool. Computer and Information Technology Scholar is Colby Park, son of Kent and Diane Park, Nephi. In addition to playing three sports and being team captain, Colby acts as Senior Class Activities Manager. Colby has made Power-Point presentations for the JHS counselors' accreditation and has worked on a project collecting video and audio interviews of local veterans. He has created webs sites for the State Little League tournament that Nephi hosted last year and his business, raising pigeons. He was awarded the Crystal Eagle, an Outstanding Citizenship award presented by UVSC. He has a math ACT score of 28. Representing the Trade and Technical Education department is Erin Peterson, daughter of Darin and JoEllen Peterson, Nephi. Erin has served as FFA President and vice president. She was also Drill Team vice president this year. Erin has participated in the Food for America program and has earned many FFA Awards, including Woman of the Year. She is also involved in Sports Medicine and HOSA. Erin's GPA is 3.87 with an ACT composite score of 28 and a Reading score of 33. Aubrey Nielson, daughter of Glade and Mary Nielson, Nephi, is the Family and Consumer Science Scholar. Aubrey is Senior Class President and president of the Culinary Arts Club. She has been involved in the family catering business, has made costumes for drama productions, and has earned many ribbons at Juab County Fairs. In addition to home-economic skills, Aubrey has participated in many music and drama productions at JHS. Aubrey's GPA is 3.9 and she has ACT scores of 28 in English and 33 in Reading. Business and Marketing Education Scholar is Chelsey Elder, daughter of Nan Elder and the late Shelly Elder. Chelsey has been an officer in FBLA and this year was chairperson of the Career Day held in March. She has volunteered at Nephi Elementary School in a variety of positions and is a mentor for the Youth and Families with Promise organization. Chelsey has her own business, a piano studio. She also helps teach the 9th grade computer class and has passed State skills tests. Speech/Drama Scholar is Lynley Peterson, daughter of Rhett and Ann Peterson, Nephi. Lynley has had leads in many JHS productions, most recently as Penny Sycamore in You Can't Take it With You and Annie in Annie Oakley. She has been a State Finalist in Original Oratory and Drama competitions. She has also volunteered at the Nephi Elementary School in the summer pre-kindergarten program and taught the drama core to elementary students. Lynley's GPA is 3.8. Her ACT Composite score is 28, with a 33 in Reading and 29 in English. Chetney Lounsbury, daughter of Keith Lounsbury and Doug and Donna Monson, Levan, is Visual Arts Scholar. She is a member of the Juab County Fine Arts Council. She helped initiate the summer "Art in the Park" program and participated in setting up art shows and helping children appreciate art. She has also volunteered her art skills by making posters for various organizations and helping with scenery for drama productions. Chetney has earned many art awards both at the school and local and statewide contests. The Music Scholar is Jacey Keith, daughter of Mike and Jana Keith, Mona. Jacey is a member of the Utah Valley Youth Symphony Orchestra and has toured to both coasts to perform. She has done much to encourage a string program in the Nephi area, at both the elementary and middle schools. Jacey is also a member of the JHS Chorus and participated in State Women's Honor Choir. She also initiated the Juab Youth String Ensemble, which has performed for a variety of programs in the community. Jacey has a 3.8 GPA. Suzanne Goble, daughter of Tom and Mary Carol Goble, Nephi, is the Dance Scholar. Suzanne was named to All-State Drill team and Academic All-State in Volleyball. She choreographed numbers for the Senior Ball floorshow and Mr. Juab. She initiated a line-dancing class for the community. She has also had leads in local ballet productions. Suzanne was Junior Class Secretary and Drill Team President. Suzanne's GPA is 4.0 and her math ACT score is 28. Brittany Webb, daughter of Roger and Kathy Webb, Nephi, is the General Scholarship Scholar for Juab High School. Brittany has been involved in a wide variety of JHS activities, including Sports Medicine, Lincoln/Douglas debate, National Honor Society, math team, chorus, and drama productions. She is a peer tutor and has helped produce programs at the Young Living Family Farm. Brittany's GPA is 3.993, with an ACT composite of 29 and individual scores of 29 in English, 31 in Reading, and 28 in Math and Science. Juab's scholars were judged yesterday on portfolio and interviews. Winners will be announced at the Tuesday Award ceremony, which begins at 7:00. Portfolios will be on display at 5:00 in the Jr. High lunchroom. The Sterling Scholar program is coordinated by Lorraine Wallace and financed by local contributors. |
