Yep, you felt right, it was an earthquake.
In fact, there were a couple of them.
A small earthquake rumbled near Nephi Friday morning,
near where two others were reported Thursday.
The University of Utah Seismograph Stations reported a
magnitude 3.0 quake, centered five miles southwest of Nephi
and in the same area as a 3.3 shake on Thursday morning.
Another magnitude 3.0 quake occurred in the same area
Thursday night.
"The Friday quake occurred at 7:58 a.m., and was centered
about 100 miles south of Salt Lake City," said University of
Utah seismologist Kris Pankow.
"Residents in Nephi and Levan, each less than 10 miles
from the epicenter, reported items falling off the shelves
but no injuries," Pankow said.
He said there were no reports of damage but said that
residents had reported they felt the rumble from the
quake.
Two 3.7 magnitude earthquakes were recorded in the area
in December, and several smaller earthquakes have been felt
since, Pankow said.
The epicenter of the Friday shock was located 5 miles SW
of Nephi in the same general area as a magnitude 3.3 shock
at 7:58 a.m. the day before.
Another shock of magnitude 3.0 occurred in the same area
at 10:39 p.m. March 18.
He said the March 19 earthquake, felt in Nephi, is part
of an ongoing series of small earthquakes that began on
March 10, 2004, and is not considered unusual.
A similar sequence in this same area in December 2003 had
a largest shock of magnitude 3.7.
On March 18, the magnitude 3.3 earthquake had an
epicenter located in the West Hills area of central Utah, 7
miles SW of the town of Nephi and 8 miles NNW of the town of
Levan.
"Two magnitude 3.7 earthquakes occurred in this same area
on December 26, 2003, and some smaller earthquakes have
occurred in the area this year," said Pankow.
The times and magnitudes of the December 26 quakes are as
follows: 5:39 p.m., M 3.8; 5:40 p.m., M 3.6; and 5:43 p.m.,
M 3.8.
Each time there has been a quake, he said, several small
aftershocks were also recorded. It is usual to have
aftershocks following any quake.
