  • JHS Sterling Scholars to compete


This week, Juab High School Sterling Scholars will be participating in the Sterling Scholars of Central Utah program, sponsored by KSL-TV and the Deseret News. Their judging will be Thursday, March 27, at Gunnison, and winners will be announced at the Awards Program to be held Thursday, April 3, at Manti High School. Students are judged on interviews and portfolios spotlighting their many accomplishments.

Mariah Guillory, daughter of Robert and Jill Guillory, Nephi, is English Sterling Scholar. She has been Student Body Publicity Manager and Head Drill Mistress. She was named to the Academic All-State Drill Team. She is the Fine Arts Council Youth Committee President and organized the Ready-Set-Read for the elementary school. She is a member of the Clarion staff and the track team. Mariah's ACT Composite score is 31, with a 32 in English, a 33 in Reading, a 28 in Math, and a 30 in Science. Her overall GPA is 3.99.

Braden Knutson represents Juab High School's Speech/Drama Department. He is the son of Kevin and Misty Knutson, Nephi, and Laura and Talmage Ball. Braden is Forensic Club President and has participated in numerous speech, debate, and drama competitions. He has held lead roles in Brigadoon, Cash on Delivery, Cinderella, and Harvey. In addition, he is co-editor for the Clarion and a member of the Literary Magazine staff. An Eagle Scout, he is also involved in Youth Court and the Youth and Families with Promise program.

Logan Vance, son of Lynn and Heather Vance, Nephi, represents Juab High School's Math Department. He has been president of the Math Team and has been involved in the bridge-building program. He is currently Student Body Publicity Manager and has played football and basketball. He is also an Eagle Scout. Logan's Composite ACT score is 28 with a 34 in math. His overall GPA is 3.99.

Sarah Simons, Social Science Scholar, is the daughter of Mark and Joyce Simons, Nephi. She is the President of the American Constitution Stars and Co-editor of the Clarion. She is the FBLA reporter and a member of the literary magazine staff and math team. She participated in All-State Chorus and is involved with the Youth and Families with Promise program. She has also participated in many service projects throughout the community. Sarah scored a 28 in English and a 30 in Reading on the ACT test. Her overall GPA is 3.94.

Greg Baird, son of Jeff and Belinda Baird, Rocky Ridge, is Juab High School's Science Sterling Scholar this year. Some of his accomplishments include science presentations for Nephi Elementary, Mona Elementary, and Rocky Ridge home-school students. He has tutored in chemistry, anatomy, calculus, trigonometry, and algebra, and has been involved in HOSA, Math Team, chess club, FBLA, speech and drama programs, band and chorus programs, football, x country, and track. Greg's ACT score is a 29 composite, with a 30 in English, a 28 in Reading, a 31 in Math, and a 28 in Science. His overall GPA is 3.9.

Laura Gould, daughter of Michael and Gina Gould, Nephi, is the Visual Arts Sterling Scholar. She is currently Student Body Activities Manager and has been a JV and Varsity Cheerleader. She has used her artistic ability to produce play scenery, posters, and art exhibits for the school and community. She has won the Art Departmental Award and has received 1st place ribbons in many art contests. She is HOSA secretary, a member of the Clarion staff, and part of the physical therapy program at the high school. Laura's overall GPA is 3.9.

Aaron Sperry will compete in the field of Computer and Information Technology. He is the son of Tony and Meridee Sperry, Nephi. He currently works as Assistant District Technology specialist and Graphic Arts TA providing computer assistance to students and staff at JHS. He is Senior Class Activities Manager and is involved with Youth Court. He has lettered in basketball, and baseball and has helped coach a Jr. Jazz team.

Dirk Hooley, son of Gary and Jeanette Hooley, Mona, represents JHS in the area of Trade and Technical Education. He is a student teacher in AutoCad and has taught himself the Inventor program. He has designed many houses, some affiliated with Davidson Drafting and Design. His designs won Best of Show at the BYU Young Craftsmen Fair. Dirk has played football, basketball, and track and has been a member of Math Club. He scored a 30 on the Science portion of the ACT test and has a 3.95 GPA.

Natalie Knowlton, daughter of Stuart and Ruth Knowlton, Nephi, is the Family and Consumer Sciences Sterling Scholar. She is the TA in the Home Economics class and is Culinary Arts Club president. She has taught 4H cooking and sewing classes and has earned many ribbons for both State Fair and Fashion Review. She has designed and sewed costumes for many pageants and plays both at Juab High School and in the community. In addition to being Literary Magazine editor and member of the JHS Clarion staff, she has been involved in the music and drama programs. Her English ACT is 28.

Blake Newton, son of Howard and Kae Newton, Mona, is the Business and Marketing Education Sterling Scholar. As FBLA President this year Blake directed the Career Day. He is also Nebonian Business Editor. Blake participated in the Hugh O-Brian Youth Leadership Conference and is a Youth Court judge. He is a peer tutor and has worked as volleyball and basketball statistician. He was voted by the JHS faculty to receive the UVSC Crystal Eagle Award as an outstanding citizen.

James Esplin, Music Sterling Scholar, is the son of Lynn and Tana Esplin, Nephi. James is Senior Class vice-president. His music accomplishments include being band and chorus assistant conductor, founding member of Core, founding member of Juab String Ensemble, member of the Utah Valley Youth Symphony orchestra, Utah Valley Philharmonia, All-State chorus, and many honor bands, and lead in Cinderella. He performed at State Solo and Ensemble in piano, viola, and voice. He is also composing his own symphony and has arranged music for large and small groups. James scored a 34 Composite on the ACT test with a 34 in English, 32 in Reading, 33 in Math, and 36 in Science.

Cheyenne Howarth, Dance Sterling Scholar, is the daughter of Kim and Craig Allred, Mona. She is Assistant Head Drill Mistress, an instructor at Lisa's Dance Shoppe, and Athletic Director assistant coordinator. Her dance skills have taken her to Hawaii and Paris, and she performed in the 2002 Winter Paralympics extravaganza. She was named to the All-State Drill team and USA All-Star Team. She has also performed throughout the state as a vocalist. She is currently reigning as the Ute Stampede Rodeo Queen.

Colette Olpin, daughter of Lloyd and Chazel Olpin, Nephi, is the General Sterling Scholar. She is Senior Class president and Drill team president. She was named to the All-State, Academic and All-Region teams for Drill, and All-State Chorus. In addition to membership on the track team, she teaches ballet and has been involved in several JHS musicals. She is also on the Clarion staff. Colette's ACT Composite is 27, with English and Reading scores both 31. Her GPA is 3.97.

The Sterling Scholar program honors outstanding students with scholarships and cash awards. In addition to Juab, schools participating in the Central Utah program are North Sevier, South Sevier, Richfield, Delta, Millard, Wayne County, Manti, Gunnison, North Sanpete, Cedar Ridge, and West Desert. The program is funded by merchants and institutions in Wayne, Sevier, Sanpete, Millard, and Juab counties.
