  • Mona City appreciates residents' patience with snow removal

That icy snow laying in heaps and piles all over Mona has created removal problems but the city council wants residents to know that they are grateful for their patience.
However, they would like residents to remember to slow down, check intersections and drive carefully.
"The snow plow has a mechanical problem," said Mike Stringer, city council member.
He said that a broken chain was keeping the salt laying part of the equipment from working.
"He (the driver) had to shovel the salt out of the truck by hand," said Bill Mills, mayor. "He did that at the school so that it would help with the ice."
The driver had also been using the small plow to clear streets but it was a slower process than using the big plow, said Mills.
"Salt does not do much good," said Lynn Ingram, city planning commission chairman. "It has been too cold for the salt to melt the ice."
Ingram is an employee of the county road department and said the county had also been having issues with clearing roads because of the ice layer under the snow.
Mills said that it had been difficult for the snow plows to do the job because of that underlying layer of ice. Plows were just not able to dig away the frozen layer.
More storms are expected, he said, and people need to be aware that an quick stop in stormy weather or on icy roads was impossible.
"People in the community have been driving too fast, especially around the school," said Mills.
The large snow plow will now be repaired and, hopefully, it should be ready for future storms.
