Halloween will be celebrated on Saturday rather than on Sunday in Nephi.
Even though the holiday actually falls on Sunday, said Mayor Mark Jones, the council is requesting that parents use Saturday, October 30, for their children to Trick or Treat.
"We will also ask community residents, who provide treats for the children, to prepare to do so on Saturday night," said Jones.
Even though the activities of Halloween are not in character with Sunday, the main reason for making the request is that Sundays are not as easy for city staff and the police department to schedule and cover.
"On Saturday night, the police department is better able to schedule for an increased law enforcement presence," said Jones.
There will also be some community activities on Friday evening at the city park, said Robert Painter, council member.
"It will be good to celebrate Halloween on Saturday after the park events on Friday," said Painter.
Jones said the council was also appreciative of the way community businesses and community residents were supporting the suggestion made by the Miss Nephi royalty and the Miss Nephi Committee to decorate Main Street with Halloween ghouls and monsters.
"There is good support for following their suggestion to make Nephi a Halloween Town," he said.
He appreciated the school jumping on board, in addition to the community, with support from students and their leaders.
"It certainly has been the hot topic on Facebook," said Justin Seely, council member. "I have also seen people stopping to look at the various characters along the sidewalk in front of businesses."
All of the Chamber of Commerce members in attendance at the monthly meeting were in support, said Painter.
"It shows what working together can do for a common cause," said Jones. "It was an idea sponsored by the youth of the community and their leaders and has been adopted by the community."
Blair Painter, city recorder, said that a few calls had been made to city hall complaining that some displays were not appropriate.
"Most of the displays are in very good taste," said Greg Rowley, council member. "Halloween is a holiday which sometimes pushes the boundaries a bit but most of the decorations I have seen have been excellent."
Jones said he thought it had been a good idea to celebrate the holiday by getting businesses involved.
Increasing business in the community was also good for sales tax collections, which is one of the primary sources of income for the city.
The Nephi celebration is patterned, somewhat, after the scarecrow contest held in Spanish Fork for the month of October.
"This is a fun contest that is dressing up the town and is something fun for our residents," he said.
