The Department of Interior has approved Williams' application to develop a petroleum pipeline system from Bloomfield, New Mexico, to Salt Lake City. The pipeline is designed to transport up to 75,000 barrels per day of gasoline, diesel and jet fuel. The project, estimated to cost $200 million, includes modifications to 220 miles of existing pipeline, construction of 260 miles of new pipeline and the development of storage and distribution facilities in Crescent Junction, Utah, and Nephi, Utah. Phil Wright, president and chief executive officer of Williams' energy services business, said, "We appreciate the extensive review from all the government agencies that evaluated our project. We believe this project means good news for Utah motorists and good news for refiners who want to reach the growing western market." Work on the project is scheduled to begin by year-end. Groundbreaking at the Crescent Junction distribution site and modifications to the existing segment of pipeline that runs from Bloomfield, N.M., into eastern Utah will begin first. Construction of the new segment of pipeline that extends from eastern Utah to Salt Lake City is expected to begin later in 2002. Approval from the Department of the Interior followed the creation of an environmental impact statement and a public review process that covered almost three years. About Williams (NYSE.
