At a planning commission sponsored Envision Nephi public meeting, comments were received from approximately 30 residents who attended the open house.
Nephi, with a population of 4,733 at the 2000 census, had 30 residents turn out to make comments on the updating of Nephi's General Plan. The surprising thing? The planning commission, the city council and the consultants were pleased.
"We have had quite a good turnout," said Susie Petheram, Senior Planner and Preservationist with CRSA.
CRSA has been well known for creating green architecture projects all over the West since 1975. The firm is serving as consultants to the planning commission on revamping the city's general plan.
"We set up stations to provide information on the various elements of the plan," said Petheram. "We asked that residents circulate and visit each station."
Goals and objectives of the proposed plan were printed on poster board and placed at each of the stations.
"We asked that residents review the goals and then place a sticker (a blue dot) to indicate if you generally agree or disagree with the language for that element," she said.
In addition, residents were provided with yellow sticky notes to use to write additional comments they wanted to make. There was space, at the bottom of each board to list additional goals and objectives they may want to see addressed in the plan.
Maps of the draft versions of a map, indicating potential areas of change ad potential updates to the future land use map, were also posted. Those wanting to leave feedback on the maps were asked to either write on the map or post a sticky note on the board.
A comment sheet, entitled: "Speak Up, Nephi!" was also provided for those who attended. There was a box to place the sheet inside once it was completed.
The sheet asked for any other comments the attendees might want to share.
"We are receiving a lot of great comments from those attending," said Randy McKnight, city administrator.
He was referring to the statements being posed on the yellow sticky notes posted on the poster boards.
Mayor Mark Jones said that the council would also like to see some of the suggestions being made put into place. However, in some instances, such as a new swimming pool and other recreation additions, there needed to be more city funds.
He was always on the lookout for grants and other monies to help accomplish those goals but, without money, and lots of it, some of them would not be forthcoming for many years.
One other item that seemed to receive a lot of dots was the need for improved roads. That is also a big-ticket fund.
"We are glad to get all of the suggestion we are receiving," he said. "These comments do help us plan for the future."
