  • Mont Yates has been selected to serve as Grand Marshal at the Mona Pioneer Days celebration.

Veteran, Mont Spencer Yates, was born November 11 (Veteran's Day), 1924. When he was about ten years old, his family moved back to their home and farm in Mona. Mont helped out on the family farm until he was eleven years old, and then he went to work for the Roundy's at Starr Ranch.
Mont graduated from Juab High School in 1943; and he always said that he got his diploma in one hand and his army draft notice in the other hand. Mont had only been at Fort Custer for about a month when he received word that his brother, Dean, had been killed in action; therefore, he came home for a week furlough. Just three days before he went back, he married Betty Keyte. They later purchased their Grandma Keyte's house, which Mont still owns today.
Mont and Betty are the parents of three sons: Cleve (deceased) and Anne, Marlin and Colleen, and Jeff (deceased) and Lori. They have nine grandchildren, twenty-four great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.
While in the army, Mont trained in military law and traffic school. He proudly spent a lot of his time serving in New Caledonia by Australia.
Mont worked as a farmer, a miner, and he worked on the railroad for Kieser-Frazier, U.S. Steel, Tooele Army Depot, and Rio Grande.
Mont now lives in St. George with his son and daughter-in-law, Marlin and Colleen. He enjoys coming back to stay at his home in Mona as often as he can. He looks forward to spending time with his Mona friends.
Mont has always enjoyed fishing, hunting, and trapping. He has many stories to tell. He really loves the mountains and especially Mt. Nebo. Mont always said he would like to die on Mt. Nebo or he would like to die sitting in a rocking chair looking at Mt Nebo.
