The Red Creek Slump on Mt. Nebo's Scenic Byway will be repaired this year.
Doug Jones, District Ranger, Forest Service Spanish Fork District, attended Juab County Commission meeting and told commissioners they would be happy to know the road was going to be repaired.
"I'm excited about this," said Jones.
A slump, in geology, is a mass movement process of slope failure, in which a mass of rock or unconsolidated material drops along a concave slip surface. Slump units move downslope as an intact block.
The road, along the "S" curves is falling away and does need to be permanently dealt with, said Jones.
The road has been approved for a realignment that will prevent future slumps from threatening the road and public safety.
Red Creek Flat, located in Juab County, is the site of a roadway which leads from Nephi to Payson.
The route has breathtaking views of the Wasatch Range and 11,929-foot Mt. Nebo, its tallest mountain.
In addition there are flat bottomlands, high-alpine conifers, red rock formations, gray sandstone cliffs and salt flats all along the route. Sights include Devil's Kitchen, Walker Flat and Mt. Nebo Wilderness.
"The slump along the road in the area, which I call Red Creek Slump, is a liability issue," said Jones.
It has been a problem as repairs do not stop the earth in the area of the road from moving so the only real solution is to slightly move the road.
"I am happy that the road work has been funded," said Jones.
