A Mona man was killed Friday morning when a tractor-trailer crashed into the back of a pickup truck he was riding in.
In that crash, 69-year-old Larry V. Kay was killed when a tractor-trailer hauling construction vehicles rear-ended the Ford Ranger Kay was a passenger in.
Hoby Metz, Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. said that the Ford Ranger pickup, was traveling southbound on Old Highway 91(Juab County Road) near the Young Living Farm by Mona and was occupied by two male adults.
“A semi tractor pulling two belly dump gravel trailers, was also traveling southbound behind the Ford Ranger,” said Metz.
Just before noon, at 11:56 a.m., the 2003 MACK semi tractor-trailer rear ended the Ford in which Kay was riding and partially drove on top of it.
“After impact, the tractor-trailer traveled off to the left side of the highway and remained on its wheels,” said Metz. “The 1990 Ford Ranger was forced off to the right side of the highway and overturned onto its top.”
The Kays were not wearing seat belts and were ejected.
The driver of the Ford Ranger, Allan S. Kay, 72, Mona, received minor injuries in the accident.
The tractor-trailer driver, Matthew Frank Tanner, 27, Provo, was uninjured.
Allan S. Kay was taken by ambulance to Central Valley Medical Center in Nephi.
“The Utah Highway Patrol is assisting Juab County Sheriff’s Office on this fatal crash as it was in their jurisdiction,” said Metz.
UHP Trooper Corey Houskeeper was the investigating officer for the UHP. Assisting Troopers were Metz and Lt. Doug Rawlinson, Supervisor.
Metz said that the south posted speed was 55 mph and the pickup was traveling at the estimated speed of 55 mph and. therefore, speed did not appear to be a factor.
The driver was referred to the Juab County Attorney for determination in whether there should be a citation issued.
The weather was dry and hot at the time of the accident, said Metz.
“Old 91 was closed for about four hours while the accident was cleared,” said Metz.
