Communities around Utah will receive $7.6 million in federal funds for local improvement projects. The Utah Community Development Block Grant program, administered by the state's Division of Housing and Community Development, has disbursed the funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to Utah's seven regional Associations of Governments. The AOGs rank proposed projects based on local priorities and state and federal guidelines The funding is for the period of April 1, 2004 through March 30, 2005. Funds may be used for a variety of community needs. They can include the operation of human-services agencies, the purchase and rehabilitation of homes for low and moderate-income people, planning and construction of community buildings, various economic-development initiatives; and water, sewer, and sidewalk upgrades. The Utah CDBG program provides grants primarily to cities and towns with fewer than 50,000 residents and counties of fewer than 200,000 people, with some exceptions. The purpose of the program is "to assist in developing viable communities by providing decent housing, a suitable living environment, and expanding economic opportunities, principally for persons of low and moderate income."
