Approximately 160 members of the 1457th Engineers Battalion returned to Salt Lake on Wednesday, May 5, after serving in Iraq. These soldiers are the remainder of the main body of the 1457th, the rear detachment is expected home in the near future. A group of the unit volunteered to remain in Kuwait to complete the task of shipping equipment back to the U.S. The arrivals, on Wednesday, took place at approximately 12:00 noon and 5:00 p.m. to the happy and relieved families and friends who were gathered to greet their soldiers. The unit had been extended last summer from six months to 12 months. Days before their scheduled departure, they were told that they would be extended for an additional 120 days. However, those orders were rescinded and the unit was back on schedule for their return home in time for Mother's Day. Local members of the 1457th included Kevin Jerman, Shane Johnson, Tyler Evans, Stephen Saunders and Sonny White. |
