Levan had small numbers at this month's council meeting held May 8, 2002. A few items of business were discussed and some action was taken.

• A unanimous vote was made to approve the minutes and claims.

• The council discussed the immediate need for a new copier and printer for the office. Town secretary Carol Mattinson said that the old copier was not sufficient to do the job that is required of it. She also said that she cannot get anyone to come and do maintenance work on it. She looked at two models of Canon copiers at Staples for the price of $600-700. Councilmember Ryan Aagard made a motion to look into buying a new copier for under $700 with Paul Mangelson seconding the motion. The council entertained the notion of taking bids for the old copier.

The council made a motion to buy a new printer that would do a better job printing the utility bills. The motion carried.

• A water quality amendment was discussed. Sunrise Engineering mapped out a new sewer system and the state paid the company $30,000 for the study. Levan Town had to pay $7,000 towards the study. The amendment states that the town will not have pay back the $30,000 until the town puts in the system, but if the council decides not to sign the amendment then the town would have to pay the money back right now. The council voted to sign the amendment now.

• Town clerk Candace Jackson read an agreement written by Nephi City that outlined the usage of a garbage truck leased to Levan. Several points were described and the council voted to sign the agreement.

• Council member concerns: Ralph Brooks said that he had contacted Tony Deats about a matching grant of $3,000 for the cemetery trees. According to Mr. Brooks, Mr. Deats said that he would grant an extension till September of 2002. Also, he would add the cost of tree removal, fencing, sprinklers, grass and new trees. According to Mayor Shepherd, Levan has already met their part of the match and just need to turn in the invoices for reimbursement. Levan's share of the match would include labor or money.

Rod Wankier said that he would look into getting about 600 pounds of fertilizer to put on the cemetery and park.

Mayor Bob Shepherd addressed the need for the council to work on getting source protection for the East Irrigation Well.

The next council meeting will be Wednesday, June 5 at 8:00 p.m. in the Levan Town Hall.
