Levan Town will have to find another way to deal with
their dog problem, said Brian Ercanbrack, Levan Town council
member.
He said that Randy McKnight, Nephi City administrator,
had contacted him and informed him that Nephi City would not
be interested in housing the animals for the town of Levan.
Ercanbrack said he felt McKnight was guarded with his
response and did not push for an explanation.
Levan has a bad dog problem and that spurred council
members to find a place to house the dogs that would be
picked up by the Sheriff's department. As of now, Levan has
no facility to accommodate the dogs.
Ercanbrack looked into the matter and proposed to
Nephi City to house the dogs at their Nephi facility, at the
expense of Levan Town.
With the refusal by Nephi City, Levan council members
are left to look at other options. They decided to pursue
the building of their own facility, seeing that as their
only option if they are serious about dealing with the dog
problem.
Mayor Bob Shepherd instructed Ercanbrack to contact
the League of Cities and Towns and find out where the town
should start when it comes to the requirements for an animal
shelter.
Ercanbrack said that a facility would have to be kept
at 70 degrees with access to heating and air-conditioning.
Someone would have to maintain the building and keep up the
maintenance of the dogs. He thought the town could get by
with a building half the size of Nephi's.
The council decided to table this issue until further
information could be obtained.
