For the first time in 40 years, judging and the awards program for the Deseret News/KSL Central Utah Sterling Scholar Program were held on the same day, March 20 at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield.
Judges from Snow College, Southern Utah University, USU Eastern, Utah Valley University, Eric Tuft, Monroe, and Doug Fryer, Spring City reviewed portfolios and interviewed some 135 nominees.
Winners for Juab High School were Ivyann Oveson, General Scholarship; and KaChele Elsmore, Mathematics. Runners-up were Keylee Kugler, Business and Marketing; Amanda Brooks, Music; and Vanessa Bunker, Visual Arts.
Names of the winners, their schools, and runners-up in each category are as follows:
General Scholarship: Ivyann Oveson, Juab: Danielle Bastian, Richfield; and Bailey Hamblin, Gunnison Valley.
Mathematics: KaChele Elsmore, Juab; Josh Visser, Delta; and JaLeigh Wheeler, Richfield.
Business and Marketing: Brady Aste, Manti; Keylee Kugler, Juab; and Alayna Leaming, North Sevier.
Music: Allyson Harris, Delta; Amanda Brooks, Juab; and McKenzie Howell, Manti.
Visual Arts: Sarah Allan, North Sanpete; Vanessa Bunker, Juab; and Wes Thomas, Delta.
Trade and Technical Education: Easton Richardson, Millard; Nathan Wayman, Manti; and Stetson Finlinson, Delta.
Family and Consumer Sciences: Audrie Naylor, Manti; Alexis Acosta, Delta; and Chelsy Hansen, North Sanpete.
Dance: Kori Jo Prisbey, Richfield; Audrey Barton, Manti; and Hunter Fautin, Piute.
Computer and Information Technology: Tyler Pearson, Richfield; Chris Crane, North Sevier; and Rosey Goodrich, Delta.
Social Science: Kelsey Barney, North Sevier; Harmonee Bigelow, Manti; and Trisha Nielson, Delta.
Agriculture Science: Amber Cook, Wayne; Mitchell Condie, Millard; and Hailee Holt, Delta.
Science: Dalles Keyes, Millard; Brayden Allen, Manti; and Emily Sheffer, Richfield.
Speech and Drama: Sharayah Lynn Anderson, South Sevier; Lauren Larsen, Manti; and Abigail Lyons, Gunnison Valley.
English and Literature: Morgan Aston, South Sevier; Christin Huntsman, North Sevier; and Becca Garcia, Richfield.
Foreign Language: Emily Perkins, Millard; Rebecca Villanueva, Delta; and Sara Sanders, Manti.
Fifteen universities offer scholarships. Winners and runners-up receive cash awards, pins, and key chains.
Even though the event will now be held regularly at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield, each school will take turns hosting the ceremonies. Juab High School, with Carli Wright, JHS English teacher, acted as hostess under the direction of Neal and Marcia Bosshardt, Redmond, Co-Chairpersons of the Central Utah Committee.
"Sterling Scholars is a team effort, and thanks is expressed to everyone who has contributed toward the success of this worthwhile program" said N. Bosshardt.
Prelude music was performed by the Juab High School Concert Choir, directed by Tana Esplin, accompanied by Margaret Thomson and Inger Oveson. Welcome was by Dr. Rick Robins, JHS Principal, with invocation by Jim Shank, Juab School District Superintendent.
Ken Beazer, Director of Athletics at Southern Utah University, served as Master of Ceremonies.
Musical numbers were performed by nominee Nathan Beck, North Sanpete, and runners-up Amanda Brooks, Juab, McKenzie Howell, Manti, and winner Allyson Harris, Delta.
Delta and Manti High Schools had the most placers with nine each. Millard High School had the most winners with three.
Schools that participate in the Central Utah Sterling Scholar Program are Juab, Tintic, Manti, North Sanpete, Gunnison Valley, Delta, Millard, Piute, Wayne, North Sevier, South Sevier, and Richfield.
Selections for next year's school winners will take place this spring. The Sterling Scholar advisor is Carli Wright.
