  • Wrestling team takes State

Our Juab Wasp Wrestlers are State Champions! Saturday night was quite historic for Juab High School. The wrestling team won the state championship, only the second wrestling championship in school history. Cars of parents and fans followed the team bus and emergency vehicle escort up and down Main Street in celebration. Scores of fans and students followed the team into the school parking lot in congratulations. Even more filled the seats at UVSC during the final day of the tournament. Student Body President, Brett Hansen, said, "It was cool to see. Not even the bigger schools had the crowd that we did." In truth, no school did have more of a fan base. The Juab section stretched from the floor to the rafters in support of the wrestlers, and the team did not disappoint.

Jake Revoir (130) was the first Wasp wrestler in the finals. He matched up against Truce Truman of Enterprise, a two-year nemesis of Revoir. After falling behind 0-7 in the first round, Jake kicked in and dominated from the rest of the way, earning himself a 9-8 victory and an individual state championship. Revoir beat Zach Brown from South Sevier to make the finals. Jake was a combined 0-3 against the two this year, but won the big matches when it mattered.

Jade Greenhalgh (140) followed with a dominating 11-4 shellacking of Maben Larsen from Millard. Jade lost his championship match last season, but Saturday night there was no doubt who one of the most dominant wrestlers in the 2A ranks was. The coaches, association named Jade as the tournament's most outstanding wrestler. Greenhalgh finished the season with only one loss and will be back in the lineup next season as a senior. Coach Waldron commented, "Jade and Jake weren't going to be stopped. They were confident in themselves and had prepared by watching film and fixing the problems that needed to be fixed. Jake had me a little worried in the beginning, but Jade was in control of the match the whole time. It will be nice having both of these guys back next season."

Thad Pay (152) lost a heartbreaker to Colton Camp of North Sevier. Thad was taken down late in the third period and lost a 2-4 decision. Thad was trying to win his second individual championship. He pummeled Camp into submission in last year's championship match up. Pay won a 4-1 decision over Guy Mellor to advance to this year's finals. He just missed finishing a fireman's carry to win the title, and time ran out before Pay could score a reversal to tie the match.

Jordan Guillory (275) finished his season with his third straight second place medal. He lost the rematch of last season's championship match to Zane Taylor of Grand. To advance to the final, Jordan made short work of Robert Dugdale from South Summit. Over the years, Jordan has definitely established himself as one of the most dominant big men to ever step on a Juab wrestling mat. "Thad and Jordan have been great for us all year long. It would have been cool to have them both finish with state championships, but I think they both know that they were a huge part of the team championship and the chemistry on the team," state Coach Waldron.

Perhaps just as impressive as the performances of the Juab finalists on Saturday night was the tenacity of the Juab wrestlers in the consolation bracket on Saturday morning. "The guys in the consolation brackets wrestled their hearts out. They deserve a lot of credit for this team championship. They pulled together and made up their minds that they were going to make this happen as a team, and then they went out and came through for us big time," said Coach Waldron. Seniors Chad Greenhalgh, Nathan Bastian, Joe Allred, and Jesse Boyd had a lot to do with it. They all pushed themselves into the medal rounds and picked up big wins and points for the team. "I was proud of the seniors. Sometimes when a senior doesn't make the finals it's hard to stay determined. These guys carried a lot of the team weight on their shoulders and didn't quit," stated Coach Waldron. Chad Greenhalgh (125) used a thrilling overtime match over Bret Yardley of Gunnison to make it into the consolations finals, where he placed 4th. Nathan Bastian (160) lost a controversial overtime match in the consolation semis, but bounced back with a huge pin over Rye Fitzwater of Enterprise to capture 5th place. Joe Allred (171) muscled his way to a 6th place finish, losing a 7-8 decision to Logan Bryant of North Summit. Jesse Boyd (215) placed 3rd after defeating Drew Robinson of North Summit.

Coach Waldron also commented on the wrestling of Wyet Ingram (103) and Justin Reynoso (112). "These-guys were awesome. They started the whole thing on Saturday for us, and we got on a roll. They saved their best wrestling for the time when it counted the most." Waldron was referring in part to Wyet's come from behind in the last seconds of the match win over Shane Sanders of North Sevier. In the consolation semi-final match, Wyet trailed 1-2 with ten seconds remaining. A tripod roll, two point near fall, and five seconds later, Wyet had advanced to the consolation finals with a 5-2 victory. Ingram sealed his 3rd place finish with another come from behind win with a 5-4 victory over Cole Stanton of Parowan. Justin Reynoso pinned Weston Bradshaw of Beaver to advance to the consolation finals where he stuck rival Rayce Christensen of Millard to secure his 3rd place finish in dominant fashion. "Those two lightweights [Ingram and Reynoso] set the tone for the rest of the guys in the consolation to follow," said Coach Waldron.

Stewart Allred (140) ended a great season placing 5th with a pin over Burke Williamson of Parowan. Two other JV wrestlers also placed. Dallen Proctor (145) pulled off two huge upsets. The first one came in the first round of competition when he defeated Beaver's most talented wrestler, Chase Powell. Dallen later pinned Scott Whitaker of Millard, knocking him out of the tournament. Dallen placed 5th after taking an injury default win over Kevin Worwood, Juab's Varsity wrestler. Kevin also defeated Scott Whitaker of Millard. The win advanced Worwood to the semi-finals where he lost in overtime to Kiley Sanders of North Sevier. Kevin led the entire match, but with twelve seconds left he gave up near fall points and the match went into overtime. Sometime during the third round, Worwood suffered torn cartilage between his ribs, making it difficult to finish the tournament. Kevin did his best to compete on Saturday, but was unable to wrestle his final match due to the pain from the injury. Levi Jensen (152) was another JV wrestler who came through for the Wasps. Jensen's biggest contribution came when he beat Jeff Moody of Millard to knock the Millard wrestler out of the tournament. Jensen went on to place 6th after losing a tough 2-5 decision to Kiley Jensen of South Sevier. In the 189 pound division, Paul Everitt finished the season with a hard fought 9-3 win over Kade Colby of Richfield. Everitt, who started the season weighing 186, gave up weight to most of his competitors. His current weight is 172 pounds. This didn't keep him from taking 5th place for the tournament.

Coach Waldron was also pleased with the efforts of other wrestlers. "I thought all of the JV wrestlers did a good job. Just the experience of being here will pay off next year. We had several JV guys who were only one win away from placing as individuals, and even though we could only score points from one wrestler in each weight this year, these kids still contributed by doing their best." Waldron was referring to Tyson Ashworth (103), Bryson Ashworth (112, one match away from placing), Shad McPherson (119), Robert Johnstun (125, one match away from placing), Kenyon Savage (130), John Terry (135). Rian Ragle (160), Todd Watts (171, one match away from placing), and Knik Beddoes (189, one match away from placing).

The team did have two other Varsity wrestlers in the tournament whom did not place. Jeff South (135) and Tyson McPherson (119) both greatly contributed to the team throughout the season. McPherson will graduate, but South will be able to return next year as a senior. Coach Waldron also commented about the efforts of his coaching staff. "Rick [Greenhalgh] and Ryan [Warner] have been great coaches. Ryan has done great with our upper weights, and Rick has done just as great with our lower weights. Steve Russo, Casy Winn, and Hadley Christensen have all helped these wrestlers develop throughout the year."
