A council member will be appointed to serve on a
recreation committee.
Nephi Mayor Chad Brough agreed the city would support
the formation of a recreation district in the community by
appointing a council member to sit on a recreation
committee.
"Other communities have done it so it must be doable,"
he said. "Let's not reinvent the wheel. Let's use what
others have learned to build on."
One example of a special service district that was
successful, he said, was the Juab County Fire District.
He said the council would like Lynn Boswell and the
other employees of Ash Grove Cement Company who have been
spear-heading the move to get an indoor pool for the
community to form a committee for the purpose of creating a
recreation district.
"Nephi City went out on a limb and hired a recreation
director," said Brough. "We didn't have the money but we
interviewed and hired a director."
"Matt Bowles, our director, is funded totally by Nephi
City," said Brough.
Brough said he had told Bowles that his first loyalty
was to the city of Nephi because it was those taxpayers who
paid his wages.
"I commit that will find somebody who will lend and
effort to help you," said Brough. He had in mind a person
who would help write grants and who knew the ins and outs of
applications.
In addition, he said, the council would commit to
assigning a person to sit on the recreation committee.
"You need to get the issue on the ballot and get it
passed," said Brough.
The numbers in attendance at the council meeting, one
of the three largest during Brough's tenure, were
important.
The committee, he said, would need to consider the
layout of the pool or recreation center, the cost of
building and a plan for continued operation and
maintenance.
Boswell said the current group who have been working
toward development of a recreation center would like to have
community members volunteer for the committee.
The county and the school board have already appointed
members to sit on such a committee.
