Photo courtesy of Cheston Slater By Cheston Slater Tuesday October 10th the Juab cross country team loaded up the bus and headed out to the Region 14 championships at Lakeside Park in Orem. Region couldn’t have been a more perfect day. The temperature was a runner’s dream in the mid 50’s, no wind and not a cloud in the sky. We’ve been excited about this race for a long time now. The first race was the junior varsity girls and boys combined. As a region rule this year, one is not allowed to run varsity if they did not compete in pre-region. Coming in first for Juab in the combined race was Bryce Esplin in a new amazing personal record (PR) of 18:57. Next was Bryton Matheson in a 20:57, a huge PR for him, too, a PR for Justus Bradley coming in at 21:16, Ben Settle in a PR of 22:28, Malachi Compton a PR of 23:16:3, Alexandria Taylor who ran an incredible 23:16:4, nearly a 3 minute PR for her, Abigail Anderson ran a PR in 23:37 and Jessica Peterson also running a PR in 30:21. We couldn’t be happier with the junior varsity teams. They are each getting so much better and push themselves every race. Next up was the girls’ varsity race. We have been hinting at and flirting with the idea of winning the region championship as a girls’ team all season. We were ready, willing and excited for the challenge. All of our training this year has led up to preparing for two races, region and state. It was a sight to see as our girls dominated the 7 region teams in a 3.1 mile race of the champions. Coming in 2nd overall and 1st for Juab was Lori Bronson in 19:08, next was Maura Williams who finished 3rd overall in 19:24, Emilia Anderson who finished 6th overall in a new PR of 19:51, Whitney Slater who set a PR in 20:38 and came in 8th overall. Our top 4 girls finished in the top 10 and took home individual medals for the day. Coming in 5th for Juab in an outstanding huge PR was Whitlee Rosquist in 21:52. Whitlee stepped up to the challenge when we needed her most rounding out our scoring varsity girls. Finishing next for Juab was Brooklyn Taylor in of 22:03, another huge PR. Rose Oveson finished up the Varsity girls also running an amazing PR in 22:51. With our girls running so well, their willingness to push when it hurt and their constant personal bests with each run, there was no other way to finish the day then as Region Champions! We are so proud of these girls as a coaching staff. They have worked so diligently to accomplish their personal and team goals this year. This is the fastest varsity girls’ team to have ever run for Juab! Their hard work has paid off. Congratulations Juab girls cross country Region Champions! Next up is State on the 18th at Sugar House Park. We have high hopes and goals to perform exceptionally well there, too. The last race of the day was the boys’ varsity. Finishing 1st for Juab and in an amazing 2nd place overall was sophomore Tyler Dinkel in a crazy fast time of 16:45. He had a 35 second PR today; when you run as fast as he is; a 35 second PR is almost unheard of. Also in an equally impressive 38 second PR was Dason Day who came in 2nd for Juab and 8th overall in a blazing 17:21. Also running in a PR was Dallin Taylor who came in with a smoking fast time of 17:48; Wyatt Harmon came in next in a new PR of 18:48. Wyatt is new to the boy’s team this year and has made huge improvement very fast. Kase White also blew past the 19 minute barrier and came in at 18:59. Jared Braden finished next in 19:07, and finishing up for the Juab varsity team was Jaron Ercanbrack in another PR of 19:50. Even though our boys didn’t quite qualify as a team to go to state, they each have gotten a lot faster, and we as a coaching staff are thrilled with their efforts. They are young and will be on top in the next few years with their young talent. We currently have some of the fastest boys to ever go through the program on the team. Give them a little time and they will be unstoppable. Two of our boys qualified as individuals to compete at state, Tyler Dinkel and Dason Day. |
