Joy R. Howell
1917-2009
Joy Rasmussen Howell, age 92, passed away October 1, 2009 in Levan, Utah.
She was born June 17, 1917 in Chester, Utah, to Andy Jost and Weltha Ann Draper Rassmussen. Joy married Jay LaVon Howell on April 6, 1938 in the Nephi Post Office by the Bishop/Postmaster. They were later sealed in the Manti Temple on March 28, 1949.
Joy was always helping others. From delivering food, to offering rides, to visits and phone calls, she was always ready to serve others in need.
She enjoyed playing cards with friends, meeting with the girls in “Club,” and picnicking up the canyon. She loved to go for drives on the Sanpete Mountain. She also loved to have her family gather together.
She is survived by two sons, Allen (Tamra) Howell and DeVon Howell, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by her husband Jay Howell.
In her words, Joy was ready to be with Jay “Together Again.”
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, October 8, 2009, in the Nephi Stake Center, 351 North 100 West. Family and friends may call one hour prior to the services. Interment will be in Vine Bluff Cemetery, Nephi, Utah.
Byron Fenton Memmott
1920-2009
Byron Fenton Memmott passed away peacefully on October 3, 2009 surrounded by his family.
He was born in Nephi, Utah, to Samuel Fenton and Ida Linton Memmott on August 11, 1920. Byron married Zelma Sherwood on April 18, 1944 in the Manti Temple.
Byron graduated from Juab High School and achieved a B.S. Degree in Agricultural Education from Utah State University in 1947. Throughout his teaching career he accumulated 315 hours of college credit. The first eight years of his career he taught at North Sanpete High School. He then taught 27 years at Lehi High School as a full time instructor and also taught welding classes in the adult education program.
Recognitions he received during his teaching career include (1) the first inductee in the Lehi High School Hall of Fame; and (2) Vocational Teacher of the Year Award for the Western States in 1982.
Byron enlisted in the U.S. Navy in October of 1942. He attended the Navy School of Lafayette, Louisiana. He graduated from Navy Officers School at Columbia University in New York in 1944. Byron served aboard a troop transport for two years in the Pacific Theatre during World War II.
Byron is survived by his wife, Zelma of Nephi, Utah; his son Marcus B. Memmott of Cedar Hills, Utah; a daughter Jann Earnest of Culver, Oregon; a daughter, Laurel Nelson of San Diego, California. He is also survived by two brothers, Duane Memmott of Richfield, Utah, and Lawrence (Chan) Memmott of Woods Cross, Utah.
A viewing was held Tuesday, October 6, 2009 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Anderson Funeral Home located at 94 West 300 North in Nephi, Utah 84648.
The funeral will be held Wednesday, October 7, 2009, at 12 noon at the Nephi North Stake Center, 1125 North 400 East, Nephi, Utah 84648. A viewing will be held one hour prior at 11:00 a.m. Interment in Vine Bluff Cemetery, Nephi, Utah.
