The eerie, quiet in the halls of Juab High School on Tuesday, September 16 was not what one might hear during a typical school day. Usually you would see kids rushing off to classes, joking with friends, and going about their day.
But, what if there had been an active gunman roaming the school? The quiet halls and classrooms would be a blessing.
Juab School District has been holding lockdown and evacuation drills at area schools over the past few weeks to test law enforcement, EMS, and school personnel responses to an actual event. Drills were held at all the elementary schools, as well as the junior high and high school.
Because of the nature of the drill, dealing with possible injuries and fatalities, only the high school had mock victims. Students donned fake bullet wounds and were tended to by EMS personnel.
Students at the elementary schools practiced lockdown and evacuation routes.
Juab County EMS, Nephi City Police Department, school personnel, and others were on hand during the drill.
Once the command for the schools to be locked down went out over the PA system, teachers and students closed and locked classroom doors, turned off the lights, and hunkered down until the "all clear" was given. Law enforcement who were first on the scene proceeded to make a sweep of the entire school. "Wounded" students were helped to the office to await medical attention.
After law enforcement cleared the school, EMS personnel were allowed to enter the school to attend to the mock victims. Students were then evacuated from the school and congregated at designated evacuation sites.
"I thought the safety drills at the high school and junior high school went very well. I am really appreciative to all of the agencies that practice with us to keep our students safe. Nephi Police Department, Juab County Sherriff, Juab EMTs, Central Valley Medical Center, Utah Highway Patrol, Nephi Fire, UDOT, and others all assisted in the drill. I think it is a tribute to our community that school safety is a high priority," said Superintendent Dr. Rick Robins.
