An Arizona man died Wednesday afternoon when the vehicle he was riding in was struck from behind causing it to roll and eject the victim.

Charlie Wilson, Utah Highway Patrol Trooper, said the two vehicles involved in the accident were northbound on Interstate-15 near Mills, south of Levan, when the accident occurred.

Dead at the scene was Robert Winger, 60, Flagstaff, Arizona, a court official. The man was a passenger in the back seat of a Ford Explorer driven by his wife.

"All three of the passengers in the second vehicle, a 2000 Escort, were asleep," said Wilson. "The driver of the Escort, was Mary Bennett, 52, Corona, California. She said she did not see the Winger vehicle until it was too late to avoid the accident."

Bennett came up behind the Winger vehicle in her Escort traveling at 85 mph. and struck the Winger vehicle, traveling at 75 mph, from behind.

"She (Bennett) reported that she looked up, saw the vehicle, and screamed waking up the passengers in her vehicle."

The impact caused the Winger vehicle, a Ford Explorer, to swerve off the road where the driver over-corrected causing the vehicle to roll.

Robert Winger was ejected as the vehicle rolled.

The Winger vehicle came to rest after hitting the 207 exit sign, said Wilson. The Bennett vehicle traveled over into the emergency lane where it came to a stop.

"An individual in a third vehicle witnessed the accident and immediately called 911 to report it," said Wilson.

Bennett, her son, daughter and son-in-law were traveling from California. Her daughter and son-in-law had recently been married and the four-some were headed East to attend another wedding reception in honor of the new couple.

Both vehicles had just topped the crest of a hill and were headed downhill when the accident occurred.
