A Ford Explorer was traveling south on Interstate 15 in Juab County when the right rear tire separated causing a crash that took the life of a woman.
Maria Sandoval, 60, died after the crash that happened Wednesday morning in Juab County near Mona.
"Near milepost 239, north of Mona, the right rear tire tread separated and the vehicle lost control," said Sergeant Corey Houskeeper, Utah Highway Patrol, Section 14, District A. "The Explorer went into the median and rolled several times before coming to rest on its top."
A group of Utah Boy Scouts heading to camp helped lift an overturned SUV off an adult female passenger who had both a leg and an arm trapped under the vehicle.
She later died of her injuries.
All four occupants were transported to Central Valley Medical Center in Nephi.
From there the male driver was flown to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in critical condition.
An 11-year-old female was flown to Primary Children's Hospital for precautionary reasons.
Sandoval, transported by ground ambulance to Utah Valley, passed away from her injuries.
A 16-year-old female was treated and released into the care of her step-mother.
"It is believed that all occupants were wearing their seat belts," said Housekeeper.
No change in the condition of the male driver has been reported since he was flown to Utah Valley Medical Center in Provo following Wednesday morning's rollover accident.
A group of young men from Cedar Hills had been traveling to Beaver High Adventure Base Scout camp when they came upon the accident site, according to a news release from Boy Scout officials.
When emergency officials arrived and told bystanders to leave, an adult with the group offered to help the trapped woman.
"I told him I had five Varsity Scouts sitting in my van less than 100 feet from the site of the crash who wanted to help," said R.L. Peay, an adult leader with the Utah National Parks Council. "They told me to bring the boys over."
The five young men had recently learned how to respond to emergencies as part of their Varsity Scout training.
"It brought tears to my eyes to see the faces of these five boys as we lifted the SUV high enough off the ground and held it long enough so the rescuer could pull her to safety," Peay said.
