An Orem man was killed in a rollover accident on Nebo Loop Road Thursday afternoon, July 18.
Michael V. Wilkins of Orem was a passenger in a 2004 Honda CR-V (SUV) being driven by his son, a 16-year old juvenile, when the accident occurred.
The youth's name is not being released because he is a juvenile.
"The vehicle went off of the road near Red Creek Flats," said Juab County Sheriff Alden Orme. "The 16-year old driver lost control of the vehicle and it rolled."
Wilkins senior was fatally injured when the vehicle rolled, said Orme.
The accident occurred at approximately 2 p.m. when it appeared that a wheel of the Honda left the roadway and the youth's attempt to correct the drift failed.
"Both the father and the son were wearing seat belts," said Orme.
The father suffered fatal head trauma in the rollover.
The teenager was transported to Central Valley Medical Center in serious condition for treatment.
"He was treated and was released the next day, Friday," Orme said.
The terrain in the area where the accident occurred is steep and involves a number of switchbacks.
"There was no sign of speed or any wrong doing and there were no drugs or alcohol involved," said Orme. "It is just a tragic, tragic accident."
The Juab County Sheriff's Office responded to the accident after being alerted via a 9-1-1 call from a motorist on Nebo Loop Road after the motorist came upon the scene.
