Even though it wasn't real, the scene of a drunk driving accident felt real as students watched fellow classmates participate in a mock accident held May 18 at Juab High School.
The scenario started off with a voice over of students making plans for the weekend. They seemed happy and ready to start the summer after graduating. The scene quickly changed as the students were heard getting into an accident and blue tarps were pulled off the cars revealing the aftermath of the crash, a head-on collision.
Shelby Cameron, crash victim, was seen standing over the lifeless body of Hayley Willmore. The driver of the car, Jaxon Allred, was injured and dazed. Three more victims were trapped in the cars.
Quickly Nephi Police Department, Utah Highway Patrol, and Juab County Sheriff were dispatched to the scene. They responded to the victims' needs and started documenting the crash site. Juab County EMS and Nephi Fire Department were close behind and began administering medical aid as well as extricating the victims. The AirMed helicopter was also called out to the scene and landed in the field next to the crash site.
Allred was given a sobriety test by UHP Trooper Dustin Livingston and was found to be 1x over the legal limit. He was handcuffed and led to an awaiting police car.
Nick Wohlforth, victim, was taken out of the car and loaded into AirMed which quickly took off and headed for the hospital. The audience later found out he had died en route due to his injuries which included a severe abdominal wound.
The remaining victims, Lydia Bailey and Leon Sherwood, were taken out of the cars and put into ambulances to be taken to the hospital. Mike Anderson, Anderson Funeral Home, came to the scene to remove the body of Willmore.
The scenario ended with JD Fox, morning radio host at KLGL Eagle 94.5, telling students that the perils of drunk driving affect everyone. The parents of Willmore, John and Janalee, came to the scene of the crash and laid flowers at the spot where their daughter had died.
The students were then taken into the auditorium of the Juab Junior High School where NCPD/School Resource Officer Kyle Bell, Trooper Livingston, and Sheriff Doug Anderson talked with students about the scene they had just witnessed. They urged the students to never drink and drive, and also to not text and drive, an additional cause of the mock accident.
JHS Vice-Principal Mike Bowring also spoke about the accident and let students know that the school community loved each and every one of them and cared about their well-being.
The Willmores then read an obituary for their daughter. Wade and Mary Wohlforth also read an obituary for their son.
The presentation ended with the curtains parting to reveal two caskets, side by side, adorned with personal items of each victim—pictures, a football jersey, a guitar—as the song "See You Again" by Wiz Khalifa, featuring Charlie Puth played. Many students were heard sniffling and crying.
This mock accident, although not real, was a grim reminder that our choices affect not only us, but those around us: parents, friends, the community, and those who respond to the scene. Scenarios like this have been held at high schools across the state and have made an impact on students and parents, opening dialogue between them about the consequences of drunk/distracted driving.
