The Juab High School wrestlers traveled to South
Summit last Saturday, and claimed their third Region Title
in a row, a feat that hadn't been done before. But if you
ask any of the twenty-four wrestlers that qualified for the
State Tournament this weekend, they will tell you it felt
the same as any other tournament.
Juab dominated the tournament from the start, losing
only five matches in the opening round. The tournament was
totally a team effort. Each wrestler looked the same with
black hair, and each wrestler dominated on the mat. Juab's
second team wrestled great, upsetting many "higher ranked"
opponents in the opening round. Juab's first team wrestled
with the same poise and same determination that has carried
them all year.
"Varsity wrestlers, they fear you, JV wrestlers, they
don't respect you," said Coach Waldron before the tournament
began. Needless to say, Juab earned their respect.
Juab qualified twenty-four wrestlers for the state
tournament, six more than last year. Juab also recorded six
Region Champions, and five Runners-up.
Taking fourth were Kolyer Andersen at 103, Tony
McPherson at 112, Mike Worwood at 125, Clint Markland at
135, Scott Wallace at 145, and Chris Painter at 171. Third
placers were Troy Mortensen at 103, Kam Kuhni at 112, Troy
Pay at 119, Cam Painter at 130, Riley Worwood at 140, Pat
Neilson at 152, and Tom Stubbs at 215.
Winning second were Ryan McPherson at 140, Dustin
Greenhalgh at 145, Ryan Ingram at 160, Bradee Beddoes at
189, and Michael Painter at 275.
This year's Region Champions are Kayle Cowan at 119,
Kolby Andersen at 125, Chet Ludlow at 130, Cody Mortensen at
135, Tanner Cowan at 152, and Jaren Lynn at 215.
The State Tournament will begin this Thursday at UVSC.
The opening round will be at 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon.
Consolation bracket will be from 2:00 to 4:00 that same day,
and the championship bracket will be from 6:00-8:00 that
night.
Friday, there will be a consolation round from
8:00-10:00, and another from 11:30-1:00. The semi-finals
will be from 3:00-5:00 Friday night.
Saturday, the consolation semi-finals will be from
10:30-12:00 noon, and the consolation finals will be form
12:00 noon-2:00. The finals will be held from 5:00-8:30 on
Saturday night.
The wrestlers' hard work and determination will
hopefully pay off for them this weekend at the State
Tournament. The Juab wrestlers will take their black hair
and hopeful hearts to the State tournament in hopes of a
State Championship; in hopes of taking one more step.
