Some work still needs to be done on the new ambulance
building before it is ready for the East Ambulance
Association to move into.
"The floor needs to be sealed," said Bob Day,
buildings and grounds superintendent."If it is not in the
contract, then it will cost the county another $1,000."
Mike Seely, county administrator, said he was told the
floor had been sealed. "The architect said the contractor
said the floors had been sealed."
However, if the floor was sealed, then it wasn't done
to Day's liking and needs to be done over. Dust still comes
up from the cracks, which it should not do, he said.
Val Jones, county commissioner, said he would check to
see about the floors and about other items with the building
architect to make certain what was under contract.
Jeana Higginson, representing the association, met
with commissioners to discuss the final plans for the
building and find out when the association could expect to
move.
Higginson also requested they be allowed to purchase
an air compressor and a power washer to use at the new
facility. The money, she said, would come from the current
year budget.
Day said, in addition to the floor seal surface, a mop
sink needed to be installed.
If there is extra money in the budget, he said, it
might go to purchasing blinds for the windows.
The architect needed to be contacted, said Neil Cook,
commission chairman. He needed to clarify what was to be
part of the building and was to be installed by the builder
and what was to be provided by the county.
Automatic garage door openers had not been installed,
for example. The doors had buttons which could be used.
"The contractor said the cost would be extra," said
Higginson. "We were told that it would cost an additional
$1,200 for them because they needed a holder."
Currently, the doors open with a wall button.
There needs to be some dry wall and some mudding done,
in addition to making certain the floor is properly
sealed.
When asked if the ambulance association would prefer
sealed or painted concrete floors, Higginson said they would
like them sealed. They plan to use the power washer to clean
the floors so they do not get muddy from vehicle wheels.
"We did not install the sand traps or the sump pumps
to have the vehicles washed in the building," said Robert
Steele, commissioner.
It was his understanding, he said, that the vehicles
were to be washed at a car wash.
Higginson said she would still like to make certain
the vehicles were really clean and would wash them off after
the car wash. Cleaning the floors was also essential.
Higginson said the association would also like to
purchase a sleeper sofa for use in the building. When it is
necessary for a crew member to sleep there, they would like
to have a sofa available.
Seely said that, before the commission could approve a
purchase, it would need to be bid. Anything over $500 needs
to be bid, he said, according to county purchasing
policies.
"We need to get three bids," he said. "It is a county
law."
Higginson said she was interested in getting a 240
volt compressor and that the building had been wired for the
voltage.
Higginson was also told that she must not artificially
order certain amounts to stay under the needed bid system.
In other words, she cannot order jackets as single items but
must order all at once.
"A washer and dryer for the facility will be purchased
out of the 2006 budget," said Higginson. "That is the way it
is planned."
