An 18-year-old Provo resident, a native of Nephi, was
killed in a collision on Interstate 15 near the University
Parkway exit in Orem on Monday night.
The accident occurred at about 6:15 p.m., when the
18-year-old driver, Michelle Lovell, heading southbound on
I-15 in the far right lane swerved to avoid rear-ending a
car in front of her, according to the Utah Highway
Patrol.
She then lost control of her car as it rolled over
several times across the median into the northbound lanes,
where her vehicle was hit by a car heading northbound.
Lovell was killed at the scene. The other driver was
taken to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center.
The northbound lanes were shut down for about an hour and
half and traffic was routed at Center Street in Provo.
The accident is still under investigation, but no one
will be charged in the incident, according to the Utah
Highway Patrol.
In addition to the fatality, the Utah Highway Patrol
reported at least six other accidents on Interstate 15 in
the area of the exits of University Parkway and University
Avenue.
At least one involved serious injuries.
UHP spokesman Doug McCleve said the cause of most
accidents was black ice forming on the road and people
driving too fast for weather conditions.
