Plans are to build a skate park at the new Mona City Park
now under construction.
Council members Darlene Fowkes, who is over parks, and
Rick Schnurr obtained some bids from various companies on a
40-foot by 50-foot flat pad for the skate park.
They also requested bids on two 25-foot by 40-foot pads
to see which option would cost the least.
"It would be the same size but could be poured into two
courts," said Schnurr.
The two council members found the cost for the concrete
pad would be close to $3,000.
"The donations from last year's fund-raising were around
$1,595," he said. There is an extra $395 from the park fund
which could be added to that.
Schnurr said he would talk with the companies which he
and Fowkes had contacted to see if the city could get
smaller pads with some ramps.
It would also be important to make certain that the edges
of the concrete pad were metal.
"Skaters grind down the edges of concrete and can ruin
the pad," said Fowkes. "So we need to make certain that the
edges are reinforced."
Mayor Bryce Lynn also suggested Schnurr find out if the
contractors had included the price of pouring concrete which
had been reinforced with rebar. He said he thought that
would be a necessity in this climate.
There was some discussion on risk insurance and liability
at the skate park, however, Schnurr said the city would
handle the liability in the same way a community-owned
swimming pool was operated and post "skate at your own risk"
signs.
