A Nephi man was found dead in the hills two and a half
miles east of Nephi on Tuesday following an intense two-day
search.
Nephi City Police Department officers, Juab County
Sheriff's Office deputies, members of the Search and Rescue
Team, two Utah Highway Patrol helicopters, and volunteers
assisted in the search, said David Carter, Juab County
Sheriff.
The individual had walked away from home at approximately
midnight on Monday, said Carter.
"I was contacted at 3 p.m. Monday by Nephi City Police
officer, Mark Sorensen," said Carter. "Twenty-five members
of Search and Rescue were called out to assist with the
search."
Carter said Sorensen also contacted the state prison at
Gunnison and requested help from police dogs and their
trainers.
In addition, a UHP helicopter en route from Salt Lake
City to Cedar City was diverted to the scene and assisted
with the search.
Carter said Nephi City Police officers had gone to the
residence of the individual after the incident was reported
to them earlier on Monday.
In spite of the intense search on Monday, the individual
was not found.
On Tuesday, a UHP helicopter again assisted the Sheriff's
office with the continuing search. Two deputies went up in
the helicopter with the pilot.
In addition, several volunteers from Nephi began
assisting with the search, he said.
"At about noon on Tuesday, about 2 and a half miles east
of Nephi, the individual was located," said Carter. The
helicopter crew talked Carter into the scene and the man was
located.
At that point, the East Juab Search and Rescue truck was
called to the scene and the man was taken by ambulance to
Central Valley Medical Center where he was pronounced dead
by a gunshot wound by Dr. Bessendorfer.
"We really appreciated the help of everyone who worked to
find the missing individual," said Carter. "Thanks to all of
the assistance we received, the person was found."
