It is time to move the travel trailer from the side of
the road and put it away for the winter.
The Nephi City Police Department has issued the annual
warning that all recreational vehicles, travel trailers and
abandoned cars must be moved from the sides of city streets
for the winter.
"They must all be moved from the city right-of-way by
Nov. 15," said Bruce Beal, detective with the Nephi City
Police Department.
After that date, owners of those vehicles still
remaining at the sides of city streets will be cited. A fine
will be levied against all those who do not comply.
"All travel trailers, flat-bed trailers, boats,
abandoned or broken-down vehicles and items of this type
must be moved," said Beal.
Streets must be kept clear for winter snow removal
which is a necessity for public safety, said Beal.
Even if the property owner thinks it will not matter
if snow builds up around the unused recreation vehicle, a
slick road and a sliding vehicle could result in serious
injury to a motorist and damage to the parked travel trailer
or abandoned car.
"A vehicle could also be covered in deep snow and the
snow removal equipment driver may not notice it," said Beal.
"The result could be a serious accident."
A city ordinance allows for a travel trailer to be
parked in front of a city residence, along the street,
during summer months for short times so that citizens can
load and unload for trips. Even in the summer, street mowing
and areas with narrow streets, necessitate the property
owner keep the parking to a minimum.
Nevertheless, police officers do take a more lenient
stand during summer months.
"We consider an abandoned vehicle one that has not
moved for several weeks," said Beal. "It may be broken down
or may just not be used but it needs to be moved from the
street."
