Card of thanks… Go to top

I would like to thank all of you for your help the past few months, either for posing signs, passing out literature or simply voting. It is a privilege to serve whom I consider to be the greatest people on earth, the residents of this area. I will try to be accessible to you through meetings with local officials or your personally. (Due to a death in the family, I apologize for any ungathered signs. Thanks you for your patience.) Darin Peterson.

After several months of political campaigning I have some great memories, feelings and some lamentations I will tell you about if you will continue to read this. While my wife, Larraine and I, were knocking on over 3000 doors and driving over 2500 miles we drew closer together in what we believed in and wanted for this country. We spent many wonderful hours together that we wouldn’t have spent without this election. When I was tired and ready to quit for the night she would say to me, “lets knock on a couple of more doors, that may make the difference in this election”. When she was hurting and tired and hadn’t been home since before school that morning she was my energy source. Besides this companionship I learned to ride a bike pretty well. I lost several pounds, which was a blessing in itself. I am in better shape now than I have been in years. Those hills of this district made my one tough, mean, lean, fighting machine, as my son who is at Fort Hood, Texas might say. I could probably even whip him in a wrestling match now. Some of the great memories that I have come from the great men and women that worked so hard for the Democratic Party of Utah County just to give the people a choice in this election. I will forever be willing to stand at their side and call them my friends and fellow patriots. In times of crisis I would want them next to me because I know their hearts and their love for this country and political process. The person we are all indebted to more than any other is Nancy Woodside, the Democratic chairperson, who spent countless hours in this election just so there would be an election. Without her there would not have been a choice, when you went to the polls. That is the way our system should work, although some in our society would have you believe that there is only one party that should exist because that party has all truth and knowledge on its side. Nancy is truly one of the great patriots and champions of freedom and democracy. Some of the fondest and tenderest memories came when we met people that I had the privilege of teaching in school and associating with through the years. Many of you brought back such fond, wonderful memories that it made this whole experience rewarding . There were even some tears of joy over some of those meetings. You people made it all worthwhile. We also met many great people for the first time, which we will remember for a life time. There are some lamentations that I have because of this election that I should mention: First, I honestly fear for the health of the two party system in our state. One party systems have never provided good government, regardless of the party in power. Second, is the sadness that I felt when some people that have known me wanted me to change parties. .They thought I was an abortionist and evil because I ran as a Democrat, when they knew I was not in favor of abortion. This issue clouded the whole campaign and made it impossible to see how good those men that I ran with really are. Third, was the effort by a few to discredit me and the other democratic candidates by using the religion I believe in against me and my fellow Democrats. I and the others with me were only doing what the leader of that religion had asked us to do, “to serve in public offices of either election or appointment”. We should be part of the process and become involved in our government as good, honest and honorable men who only sought to make this a better country and state. Finally I fear that in the future there may not be many willing to do all the work that is needed to make a choice available to the citizens of this county. Hence there will be no true election process. I would like to thank every one who supported me in this great campaign and everyone who had enough faith in me to cast a vote for me. I believe that vote was cast more for their faith in the system than for me as an individual. The work that Larraine and I did in this election was not for political gain but because we believe in this great county and Constitution. I pledge my support to the fine man that was my opponent in this contest. Darin has become a friend of mine. I believe he will represent us well because he is an honorable man. I wish all candidates were as honorable as Darin. PAUL MEREDITH
