Nephi City Council voted to have Nephi officially
celebrate Halloween on Oct. 30, a Saturday, rather than on
the traditional date, Oct. 31, a Sunday.
Council members agreed with the mayor and agreed to
recommend that Halloween be celebrated in Nephi on Saturday,
not on Sunday.
"The candy will be available at our house on Saturday,
not Sunday," said Chad Brough, mayor.
The reasons for celebrating the holiday on a day other
than the traditional date, were many, said Brough. Two of
the most obvious were the police force&emdash;no overtime,
and school&emdash;no tiredness on Monday morning.
"We will have the police staff on hand that night," said
Brough. If the holiday were celebrated on Sunday, it would
require calling on officers to work on the usually quiet
evening. Saturday is a well-staffed day because there are
more things happening in the community on that evening.
The Saturday night celebration will also be better for
young people in the community. "It is not a school night,"
said Brough.
In his opinion, young people in the community could
Trick-or-Treat on Saturday and then not be tired for school
the next day as they would be if the holiday were celebrated
on Sunday.
Daylight savings time ends on the evening of Halloween.
So both Saturday and Sunday will be the last nights when the
daylight may be enjoyed for one hour longer in the
evenings.
