On the afternoon of Sept. 27, Paul V. Mangelson, was critically injured in an accident at the city park in Levan.
Mangelson, a Levan City Council member, was working to help unload heavy roof trusses at the Levan City Park when he was critically injured.
“Paul (Mangelson) was instrumental in writing and receiving a grant to build a new bowery at the city park,” said Alden Orme, Juab County Sheriff.
Because of his interest in and involvement with the project, Mangelson was at the park to assist city crews with the unloading for the materials to be used in the construction project.
“They were using the Levan City boom truck,” said Orme. “As the material was being lifted, the material shifted or swung.”
The roof trusses collided with Mangelson, striking him in the head and causing severe head trauma, he said.
“He was taken by Levan City Ambulance to Central Valley Medical Center in Nephi and was then taken by air ambulance to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center,” said Orme.
Mangelson has been in the intensive care unit at UVMC since he arrived at the facility.
His condition is reported as improving.
Mangelson has been devoting volunteer time to his community since he retired as a Utah Highway Patrol Sergeant after nearly 39 years of service to the Utah Highway Patrol and the citizens of the State of Utah.
As a member of the UHP, Mangelson was involved in the seizure of thousands of pounds of marijuana, cocaine, methamphetamine, and other drugs. His arrests led to the forfeiture of hundreds of motor vehicles to the State of Utah because of their use in the transportation of controlled substances.
He has also was responsible for the seizure of many hundreds of thousands of dollars that were the proceeds of illegal drug trafficking. Those monies and vehicles were also forfeited to the State of Utah to help assist local and state police and prosecution agencies in enforcing the controlled substance laws.
