Joseph John Harwood
1914-2006

Joseph John Harwood, 92, died Sunday, September 24, 2006, in Nephi. He was born April 18, 1914, in Spanish Fork to William and Emelyn Royston Dugmore Harwood.

Joe was a farmer all his life, having started when he was 11 years old He was a hard worker&emdash;known for his straight furrows, neat haystacks, and weedless fields. He drove a school bus made by his dad, from the time he was 15 years old until after he graduated from Spanish Fork High School. Many people have said he was the best driver they ever had. He later went to work for the McCoard Gas and Oil Company, driving a truck. He also worked at the Del Monte Canning Plant and the Sugar Factory. He was a custodian and bus driver for Nebo School District for many years. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, and hunting.

Joe married Erma Peterson on January 17, 1940 in the Salt Lake Temple. He was a devoted husband and father. Erma preceded him in death on December 3, 1977. He married Donna Gull Anderson on May 10, 1982. They were later divorced.

Joe is survived by 3 daughters, Mary (Verden) Peterson, Orem; Lucy (Nelson) Jones, Nephi; and Estella (Scott) Houston, Santa Barbara, California; 11 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by 1 brother-in-law, Jay (Betty) Peterson, Spanish Fork; 3 sisters-in-law: Delma Gun, Orem; Maxine (Ted) Gordon, Lake Shore; and Lois (Kent) Davis, Lehi. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Erma; 2 brothers, Homer Harwood and Henry Harwood; 6 sisters: Edna Staderman, Dessie Beck, Phylis Tolhurst, Anne Francis, Kathleen Mary Harwood, and Eleanor Butterworth; in-laws Heber and Estella Peterson; and sister-in-law, Vivian Everitt.

A private family Graveside Service was held on Saturday, Sept. 30. Interment was at the Spanish Fork City Cemetery.
