  • Nephi City’s water issues now under repair

Because of Mother Nature, water supply issues have troubled Nephi City this summer.
The first problem was caused by a wildfire that affected delivery from Bradley Springs to the Nephi culinary system. Equipment damaged when the fire started near the source was quickly repaired and new parts ordered to make a permanent repair.
Then the Equipment Shed Well suffered a lightening strike.
“It did a minor amount of damage,” said Randy McKnight, city administrator.
A bearing was damaged and shut-down the motor for the pump. As a result, said McKnight, the motor had to be pulled so that it could be repaired.
That meant, that for a time, only the Jones well could be pumped to supply water for the city. However, the Jones well proved adequate to the task of providing culinary water for city resident needs.
McKnight said that a neighbor of the Equipment Shed Well reported that the well motor did not sound right. When a bearing goes out, said McKnight, it is obvious to anyone listening.
“We were able to avoid any further damage to the motor,” he said.
The motor has been repaired and is now back on line and is performing properly.
However, a lesson was learned, said McKnight.
“Lightening protection was installed when the Equipment Shed Well was put into service,” he said. “We are now looking at adding more protection.”
McKnight said that Tony Ferguson, Nephi City Power and Gas Superintendent, was investigating system protection plans and a further report would be made to council members.
