A 10-year airport improvement project will enter stage 10 with an updated master plan.
“Nephi City has been engaged in an airport improvement process that has spanned more than 10 years,” said Randy McKnight, city administrator. “The process has resulted in several individual projects being funded by grants from the Federal Aviation Administration and the Utah State Division of Aeronautics.”
The ninth project is in the final stages of completion and included construction elements for the runway, taxiway, apron and entry, he said.
The tenth project is also the subject of a grant from the Federal Aviation Administration, McKnight said.
“We have selected a consultant for the project,” said McKnight.
That consultant is the firm of Barnard Dunkleburg, who have completed many such projects in the past for other cities.
McKnight said the firm had an excellent background in performing such studies.
Creamer and Noble Engineers, St. George, have been the engineering firm who have been helping with the airport project and will work with the new consultants on completing the study.
“The way the program works,” said McKnight, “is that the FAA requests the quantifications without talking about price.”
That allowed the city to select the firm best qualified to do the job without worrying about the bottom line.
“We had the task of selecting the consultant who we thought would be the best qualified,” he said.
The scope of work was discussed with applicants during the selection process. The FAA will now review the scope of work and the qualifications of the consultant.
The FAA requires that the city hire an engineer and use the same scope of work identified.
“If there are any significant differences, we will have to iron those out,” said McKnight.
“Project #3-49-0023-10, is a planning project that is just getting underway and will result in the development of an updated airport master plan,” McKnight said.
Nephi City council authorized Mayor Mark Jones to sign all documents related to the project, including ratification of the mayor’s signature on the FAA grant application for the project.
