No one responded to the call for photos of the
Ponderosa and Bear Canyon campgrounds in Salt Creek Canyon
so only photos of the "after" will be sent with the Juab
County Commission letter.
"We hoped that folks from the area would have photos
of the campgrounds, even photos with kids in the foreground,
but no one came forward," said Neil Cook, commission
chairman.
The commission was looking for photos of scout groups,
girl's camp groups, family reunions and parties, 4-H club
outings and any and all photos that showed the campgrounds
in the background they way they used to be.
The grass was green, watered and mowed at Bear Canyon.
In Ponderosa, the campground was kept clean and free of
debris.
"Now it is a sorry mess," said Robert Steele,
commissioner.
Commissioners toured the campgrounds recently and
decided they would write a letter to the officials who
direct the forest plan for the area.
"We are going to complain," said Val Jones,
commissioner.
Cook said the commission will direct Glenn Greenhalgh,
economic director for the county, to write a letter to the
Uinta Forest leadership which will outline the concerns of
the commission and of area residents who have watched the
campgrounds continue to deteriorate.
"There are dead trees which have been pushed over and
left to rot in Ponderosa," said Steele. "The whole place is
just a disgrace."
"We have asked Glenn (Greenhalgh) to take photos of
the way the campgrounds look to go with the letter," said
Cook.
Cook said the canyon condition was a poor reflection
on the county and something needed to be done to attract the
attention of forest officials.
The letter and photos will also be sent to members of
the Utah Washington D.C. delegation.
"If anyone has any birthday or family photos of the
canyon the way it used to be in the background, we would
like copies," said Cook.
Greenhalgh can scan the personal photos in on his
office computer while the person donating the photo waits so
the original can return home with the donator.
