Jewell Goble
Jewell Marteen Hansen Goble, beloved mother, grandmother,
great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, who treasured
each day's blessings and who overcame great hardship, died
on Saturday September 8, 2001 in St. George, Washington
County, Utah.
Jewell was born November 21, 1917 in Fountain Green,
Sanpete County, the first child of Clarence Willard and Etta
May Hansen, son and daughter of pioneers. The love, faith,
fun and security that grew from within the Hansen home in
Fountain Green has nourished several generations of Utahans
who now comprise a large extended family living happy and
productive lives throughout the state and far beyond it.
Jewell cultivated family ties as organizer, doer,
cheerleader, comforter and genuine kind heart. She was a
woman who loved activity, especially when it involved
sharing events of passage with friends and family. She sent
two of her sons overseas to support the Vietnam war and
prayed successfully for their safe return. She was proud of
her family's many accomplishments especially all the
children. She taught children lessons of their faith and
heritage, encouraged them to grow their talents, and
instilled in them an abiding appreciation of their
history.
She married Elwin Grant Goble of Nephi, Juab County,
in 1935, a union later solemnized in the Manti Temple. Elwin
and Jewell raised their five children in Nephi, where she
provided a loving home and was active in the Church,
including service as Sunday School teacher, president of the
MIA, and Relief Society president. She was active in Relief
Society until the very end of her life. Her work in Nephi
extended outside home and church; she was a 4-H leader, a
waitress, and a gifted seamstress, designing and sewing baby
dresses for sale in Salt Lake City. Elwin and Jewell moved
to Murray in 1958, where their two youngest boys completed
school. She worked as a tailor at the Paris Department
Store. She was also employed by the school district and
University Hospital. She completed her working career as a
baker at Smith's in 1972. In 1972, at age 54, Jewell
suffered a severe stroke. At first, it broke her physically
and emotionally. And it broke the hearts of her family and
friends. But it never did break her spirit. Jewell did
everything she could to recover all that she could, every
day, motivated by faith, love and a strong sense of duty.
I can do it," she would say with pride and conviction.
There are few for whom the words meant more. She succeeded
in regaining much that had been lost, moving back to Nephi
when Elwin retired, and spending her last days in St.
George, busy with what she could do, keeping track of her
kids and grandkids, always taking great joy in being
together with friends, family and the community of the
Church. She was a sweet and beautiful lady.
Jewell is survived by her beloved brothers and
sisters, Jessie May Sudweeks of Orem, Kay Orme Hansen of
Salt Lake City and Nephi, Iona Devona Sperry Bailey, of
Nephi and Gordon Merrill Hansen of Sandy; her loving
children, Grant Larry Goble of St. George, Ronald Merrill
Goble of Mesquite, Nevada, Carolyn Olson of Snoqualmie,
Washington, and Elwin Brent Goble of Nephi; 15 grandchildren
and 24 great grandchildren, who will deeply miss their
wonderful grandmother. She was preceded in death by her
husband Elwin, her brother Willard Clayton Hansen, and her
son, Michael Burke Goble.
Funeral services will be held at 11 am Friday
September 14, 2001 in the Nephi 3rd Ward, 345 East 500
North. Friends may call Thursday evening from 6-8 p.m. at
